Take unfunded offer then reapply to funded programs...??

so i currently only have unfunded offers for a phd. it could "change " by the end of april...hopefully. 

idk what to do.. take an unfunded offer for a year, take some classes, then reapply with the new classes, more experience, and a better writing sample? I'm writing my thesis now, so I know that will be better than what I applied with this year.  or just hope to find some job that will make me more competitive and reapply next year (with a better writing sample) ? i don't really know what would help my CV during the year besides staying in school...?

has anyone transferred programs? howd that go? 

any advice is welcome.. thank you!
