Studiio Apartment hunting in Montreal

Hello all:

I will start my PhD stuides at McGill University in the Fall 2010. I am an older graduate student and will move from US to Montreal. I am a very private person. If possible, I would like to live in a quiest and clean area.

Please advice me on the following issues:

(1) McGill on campus vs off campus graduate housing

(2) Which "ideal" areas for graduate students who is seeking for off-campus studio apartments? - in terms of less noisy and no parties.

Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

I've never lived in Montreal, but be aware that in Canada many realtors use the term 'bachelor apartment'.

I'm an international student, an older graduate student too. How easy is it to find a decent apartment there? I will be going there early August 2012, waiting for Visa.

Is McGill activity affected by recent violent protest?
