  1. Honestly it depends on your working relationship between you and your current employer. I am in the same situation. I have been working for the same university almost 8 years and plan to move out-of-state for my PhD studies. I told the Academic Dean as soon as I decided to go back to school. - I have a very strong relationship with them. I have a friend who works at a small college. She is also planning to quit her job and attending graduate school in the Fall. However she has a "bitter relationship" with her boss. She decided not to tell them until the very last minutes. Her going back to school actually is an "escape" for her current job. - it is sad. In my opinion, if you have a good working relationship with your current employer, you should tell them now. You never know. You might be employed by them again after obtaining your PhD. You don't want to "make so many enemies." Also... we are now living in a very small world. Your future employer might know your current employer. .... Good luck!
  2. My status on SGS DID not change, it is still said "under review"????? I am guessing I will receive a rejection letter. sigh:) By the way the Faculty of Information eventually replied my email message. It is only one sentence - a letter has been sent to me. I am NOT impressed how UT handled my application. Oh well ... I am going to other Canadian school (BETTER!) Good luck on your wait.
  3. Thank you very much for your response. Yes the deadline for accepting other school is over - I have put down "deposit." But as I said, University of Toronto is my dream school. I don't mind "wasting" a few hundred dollars if I get accepted at UT - I know I know it sounds so silly. I agree that I should wait another week before I contact UT again. I am still hoping that some readers who applied to the same program will be able to give me some information about UT's admission decision. Still waiting ...
  4. Hello all: It's May 9th. I am still waiting for my PhD admission decision from the University of Toronto iSchool. It is my first choice - I have been accepted to another school. ... BUT Ut is my dream school. I am wondering whether I am the only one who is still waiting - no acceptances and no rejections. I really do not know what that means. I have sent an inquiry to iSchool, School of Graduate Studies, and Admission Coordinator on April 14th. I was told that a letter will be sent out to me the following week. But there is still no signs of the "letter." And I am very hesitated to bother them again - I am afraid that the admission and iSchool staff think I am too "pushy." (1) Did anyone receive the acceptance from UT iSchool yet? (2) If so, when did you receive the letter? (3) Did anyone receive the rejection letter yet? (4) If som when did you receive the letter? I welcome any advice and thoughts - What should I do? Should I continue waiting or should I give up hope? - I will move from US to Canada. So I cannot afford to wait much longer - I need to prepare to move and attend other Canadian school soon. sigh:)
  5. Have you been in Hong Kong? - I visited the city in 2004 and 2007 respectively. I cannot deny that it is an amazing city. But the air pollution is very bad. Since your major is public health, it might be an ideal place to study. This former British colony had changed a lot since the late 1990s. It used to have bilingual street sign. Now is only limited to the tourist areas. The university is located at the mid-level Hong Kong island. The locate/small restaurants do not have English menu. Do you know Chinese? Another concern I have is the standard if the academia. HKU was part of the Commonwealth countries when it was a British colony. It had a very high standard and was very hard for the locate students to get accepted. Twenty years ago there were only two universities in Hong Kong. Now is very different. Hong Kong is part of China and the education system has changed and HKU accepts more students. The student body is much much bigger than 20 years ago. It is NOT so hard to get accepted. - Hong Kong is now has 7 or 8 universities. In addition, the education system has been changed and I have no ideas what is the standard of the Hong Kong higher education under the China government's education regulations. You have to ask yourself why will you decline John Hopkins University and attend HKU? If it is for life time adventure and international study opportunity, that might be fine. If it is a hope for better future employment, then you need to give this idea a second thought. I will go for John Hopkins University.
  6. Hello all: I will start my PhD stuides at McGill University in the Fall 2010. I am an older graduate student and will move from US to Montreal. I am a very private person. If possible, I would like to live in a quiest and clean area. Please advice me on the following issues: (1) McGill on campus vs off campus graduate housing (2) Which "ideal" areas for graduate students who is seeking for off-campus studio apartments? - in terms of less noisy and no parties. Any suggestions are highly appreciated.
  7. I don't know anything about McGill's MA program. I applied to PhD and got acceptance in mid-March. I guess it is very different from department to department.

  8. Hello all - I am an American graduate student who applied PhD programs to three Canadian universities, McGill, University of Toronto and University of Western Ontario. I thought it will be harder for me to get into McGill and UofT programs than UWO. I am so surprised with the outcomes. - I got a rejection letter from UWO but I got into the PhD program at McGill with Graduate Fellowship. So ... does it mean the ranking of these three unviersities is: UWO, UofT and McGill? I am a little bit confused... according to the Gradcafe forums, Mcgill and UofT are far better schools than UWO... Any ideas?
  9. Hello - I got two Master's Degrees from UW-Madison. I was an "in-state student". That is what I know - If you come to Wisconsin simply for pursuing your further education, you have to pay for the "out-of state" tuition not only the first year, but years of the entire program. For instance, if you are coming to Wisconsin to pursue your PhD, you will have to pay four years "out-of-state" tuition fees unless you receive some kinds of scholarships, fellowships, or graduate assistantships. You can check with the Office of Registrar via the Uw-Madison website.
  10. I am really appreciated all your inputs! - My "dilemma" is that Suracuse iSchool program is NOT a "regular" PhD program. I hesitate ... it is becuase I am worry about wasting my energy and money into the program, and at the end, the degree is NOT recognized. It is called "doctorate of professional studies" (DPS). - 51 credits "executive Doc" program with limited residency requirerd. (The regular PhD is a 78 credits program.) It is a new program - two years? If I accept the DPS program, I can keep my job and take classes. Also the program at Syracuse iSchool is not the best fit of my research interests. Thus I have decided to go to McGill. Again, thank you very much for all your inputs. It is very helpful.
  11. - I received the letter of acceptance from Syracuse iSchool yesterday, informing me that I have been admitted to its PhD program. Ten days ago I received my letter of acceptance from McGill. Now I have to make a choice between Syracuse and McGill. Syracuse is very expensive and it has no funding available fo me; but I will probably receive 75% tuition assistance from the college where I am currently working for. And I do not need $ for living expenses. I live in New York. McGill gives me $5k Provost's Graduate Fellowship and I only need to pay $1500 per year plus living expenses. If you were me, which school you are going to pick? - I appreciate any advice I can get.
  12. Hello all: I am US Graduate student who has been accepted to the PhD programs at Mcgill, University of Western Ontario and University of Toronto respectively. Now I am facing a very "tough choice." McGill offers me Graduate Fellowships and International Student Award (I will pay the same amount of tuition as Quebec PhD students). No fundings from UWO and UT. Which one should I pick? I welcome any recommendations and comments ... Thanks!
