Hope everyone is staying safe. The uncertainty and hyper competition of cs grad school applications is really affecting my psyche. Not sure if this post will help that, but thought it might be worth a shot.

I'm applying to masters programs, with the eventual goal of pursuing a PhD. I would be very grateful if someone could help me understand where I stand.

Type of student: Rising 4th year domestic Asian male

Undergraduate Institution: Large state school with no grade inflation (US news top 40 cs department)

Undergraduate Major: Honours Math, CS minor

GPA: 3.89

GRE: 169Q, 162V, 4.5W

Courses:

  • Computer Science: Intro Programming, Intro DS&A, Databases, Computer Architecture, Programming Languages, Algorithms
  • Math: Calc I-III, Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra, Combinatorics, Numerical Analysis, Probability, Communication & Cryptography, Dynamical Systems, Real Analysis, Differential Equations
  • Stat: Intro Stat, ML & Data Mining, Statistical Computing, Big Data Methods, more misc classes

LOR: weak

Research: Worked for a year with a cs professor on a DL computer vision project; no publications

Internships: SWE internship at local startup; another SWE ML internship at a large but not well known company

I think my profile is overall lackluster and weak. I have no idea where to apply. I’m super depressed and just want to get these applications over with. Would be very grateful if anyone could help suggest programs where I would be competitive. Thanks and be well.
