I am a May 2020 college graduate and am finalizing my application for the 2021-22 Fulbright ETA in Greece. This is one of the more competitive grants with 13 fellows chosen. I am a dual citizen of the U.S. and Spain (not sure if that makes a difference). My qualifications are:

  • Studied abroad in Madrid
  • TEFL-certified and experienced teaching English
  • Certified Medical Interpreter
  • Taught myself to speak Greek through Google Translate even though fluency in Greek is not required.
  • Was a club head for a literary translation magazine

Right now I'm doing the final edits on my statement of grant and personal statement. If anyone has advice on how to make my application stand out, I'd really appreciate it.

Hey there!

I'm also a May 2020 college graduate and also a finalist for a 2020-21 Fulbright Open Study/Research in the East Asia region. I think what helped out my application the most was developing a theme around your experiences in your essays. Specifically for the PS, I centered my essay around how my childhood interest in foreign language and sciences shaped my professional goals, highlighting my research experience and foreign language study to show how that interest has stuck with me until now. Since I applied for research, what I had to convey in my SoGP might be slightly different from yours; what I did was made it clear why my research is important, why I had to be in the specific country I chose, what I aimed to do by the end of the grant, and what I would do after Fulbright.

Hope this helps!
