Canada Applications: How should I contact potential adviser for the second time in two years?

Hello,

I have tried applying to Canadian PhD positions in Genetics/Molecular Biology last year, and many professors replied that they either don't have fund, or that they already took new students. So, I want to re-try this year. I was wondering how would you advise me to start my email, should I remind them that I have contacted them last year? What do you think is the best way to say.

PS: I an an international student. I think my application was good enough las year, but has definitely improved this year as number of accepted articles increased (few are also under review).
My GPA is excellent, and my TOEFL score is also very good.
