Mechanical Engineering: Georgia Tech or Rice University

Recommended Posts

I would be starting my PhD next Fall. I know Georgia Tech is higher in rankings, but I like my PI at Rice better. Also, I did not get a great vibe from the Georgia Tech recruiting event. The offers are pretty much the same in terms of stipend. Any insights on these two programs?

I don't have any insight on those particular programs, but I'm choosing among graduate programs with a similar predicament. Here's what I've learned regarding ranking: don't just look at the school's ranking, also look at how well-known your potential PI is among her/his network. A well-respected PI within your research subject can come from any school. As for your concern about liking the PI/school atmosphere at Rice versus GA Tech, don't forget that you'll have to work with the people at your school of choice for 4+ years and that the day-to-day things make up the bulk of your experience.

Good luck!
