caizlurol Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I'm torn between NYU Steinhardt's Educational Communication and Technology program versus Arizona State's Educational Technology program for PhD. Both are highly regarded. Which school and program are better? (NYU offers more $$ in terms of funding).

Both are highly regarded. Which school and program are better? (NYU offers more $$ in terms of funding). Congratulations on your acceptance. I think ASU's program is better known within the edtec community -- lots of professors come from there, but NYU's program looks very impressive from what I've read of it. One odd thing I noticed was ASU's edtec website has been completely redone, the edtec page looks like it's been stripped to a bare minimum, not a factor per se, but is a bit off-putting. Did you choose ASU? If so was the funding sufficient? I'm very curious as I'm considering applying to both programs this fall. Would love to hear what you chose to do. thanks! caizlurol 1
breakfast Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I'm not in your field, but I have some words of caution regarding ASU. I grew up in Arizona and did my undergrad at ASU. Before you accept any offer, make sure that your funding is guaranteed for x amount of years. The state legislature has been and is cutting the education budget at every chance they get. During my last year or so at ASU, the university had to take some drastic measures to survive. They got rid of departments, consolidated departments, and forced unpaid furlough days on all university employees. So, if you get a funded offer from ASU, make absolute certain that you are guaranteed that funding no matter what else happens to the education budget (it isn't likely to get any better, thanks to a terrible governor and state legislature), and make sure that whatever program you are going into will still exist in time for you to finish (although I don't think you have anything to worry about in the education field. The university is very proud of its education programs). jrpk 1

Hi JRPK, Thanks for your kind words. I got into ASU and University of FL. I didn't apply to NYU ... I was about to but changed my mind. (I went there for my MA). I decided on ASU and I am so happy that I did. I recommend their program. They just went through restructuring of their whole department. The Professors care a lot about their own students, which is wonderful. Apply to both but make sure you make it a point to visit both departments and make yourself known. I went all the way to AZ from the East Coast to visit and I'm so glad I did. Good luck!
