Accepted after a waitlist, can I withdraw previous acceptance?

Hello,
I was accepted at my number 2 choice program and waitlisted at my number 1 (not harvard lol). Beginning April I thought it was impossible to be accepted there and contemplating a rejection I accepted my number 2. A few days ago I received a late waitlist acceptance at my number 1 choice and now I am at odds. Can I withdraw my initial acceptance and if so are there consequences? This is for physics.
I am really sorry for the university but really wasn't expecting the new acceptance, specially after being rejected at other similar ones. Admissions are weird.
