  1. What is the tarnished past? I think you are being too hard on yourself! Apply to Yale, Harvard, and Chicago Divinity Schools. I am sure you will get in and get a full scholarship and a stipend - as I did!
  2. Very thoughtful of you! Don't let him change your mind!
  3. Interesting that you have already decided to decline Emory but will do so only after having had the conversation! 😅 You'll do great at Yale!
  4. Ghosted? That's a new category for me! If you do't get into ND, my vote is that you go to Purdue!
  5. Also, see Princeton's Predoctoral Fellowship Initiative: "The pre-doctoral fellowship is a one year, fully funded fellowship that includes an offer of regular admission to the sponsoring doctoral program the following year. The fellowship is intended for students who would benefit from an additional year of training before formally entering the sponsoring department’s Ph.D. program." https://graddiversity.princeton.edu/pre-doctoral-fellowship-initiative
  6. The net cost for the MA in PHilosophy at Tufts is only around $2k. https://as.tufts.edu/philosophy/current-students/graduate-programs/ma-philosophy https://as.tufts.edu/philosophy/prospective-students/graduate-programs/graduate-admissions-faqs
  7. You seem to be in a good place. Top public schools might be more forgiving than top private schools. Regarding the latter, you can always apply for the PhD and mention you'd be open to be admitted to an MA instead. Take a look at the New School MA to PHD Philosophy track - it seems to be a seamless transition without having to apply for the PhD. https://www.newschool.edu/nssr/ma-philosophy/
  8. You could also try get a PhD through alternative routes - like this PhD by Papers option: https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=phd+by+papers+uk&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
  9. Any late decisions, waitlist outcomes, choosing among different offers?
  10. 1. What matters most for admission to top philosophy grad schools? Your writing sample has to be a killer. Killer letters of recommendation from killer professors. Avoid B's and C's at all costs - go for A-, A, or A+ in all of your classes. Avoid 4.0 GPA, go for 3.7-3.9 overall, and A, A-, A+ grades in all your philosophy classes (4.0 makes one think you have no life outside of academics). Find a professor you really want to work with and make that professor really want to work with you. Getting that C will not hurt - but don't get any other B's or C's. Hope this helps!
  11. I know someone who’s 43 and was just accepted to a PhD at a top public school.
  12. Stipends are usually renewed every year.
  13. Anyone else has heard from Harvard CSR? I have at least one friend who received an acceptance letter on Feb 24th.
  14. I just received an email from HDS asking if I want to be a point of contact for students admitted this year (to answer questions by email and so on…) so, I guess decisions have been made and will be released very soon!
  15. They usually release decisions around that time, so about 10 days to go!
  16. I think what would matter most is the BA in Philosophy with Honors. I know people who got into Harvard's PhD in Philosophy having come from obscure public institutions - so do not sweat about it. Not sure about the JD, but I do not see why it would be a hindrance. I do know someone with an MBA and an MPP who applied for a PhD - not in Philosophy - and got rejected across the board because it seemed to the admissions committee that the individual was just after another degree. A PhD is a professional program - not an existential one. You do not need to have TA/TF experience to get into a PhD program,. If you attended a top law school, I do not see why you would not do at least decently on the GRE. Please note, Harvard's Philosophy Department does not even require it. In other words, go for it!
  17. Did you get the five rejections yet? 😁
  18. Philosophy of Religion. I heard from UVA on the 27th - email to check the status on the portal.
  19. Did you make a decision on your THREE acceptances? 😃
  20. I got into Fordham and UVA. If you are waitlisted at Fordham, hopefully my acceptance of UVA's offer will bump you up at Fordham! Good luck everyone!
  21. A few things: To get a PhD in Philosophy, you generally need to have an MA in Philosophy. Given that you will be graduating with an Mdiv, you probably should apply for PhD's in Divinity Schools or seminaries. Both Religion and Philosophy departments offer Philosophy of Religion tracks, but the prerequisites and requirements in each department differ. Research. I think Jesuit schools would be suitable for your research interests. I know many folks who went from an Mdiv to a PhD, but in Religion departments and not in Philosophy. In sum, to do a PhD in Philosophy at a Philosophy department, you need to get an MA in Philosophy. The philosophical gourmet has a good ranking of (some fully-funded) MA's in Philosophy. You *could* go from a Mdiv to a Phd in Philosophy in a Philosophy departments at Jesuit schools (though I suspect some will require you to get an MA in Philosophy first). You options are broader if you plan on a PhD in Philosophy of Religion at a Religion department.
  22. I *heard* they already made decisions but unsure of why they have not released them yet.
  23. Let @Breadsonknow what you decide!
