Why are acids a thing

I understand that acids dissociate. HA (strong acid) -> H+ + A-. But why does the H+ bond with a water molecule? Is it really that much more stable to do so than to just bond with the A-? It seems like the H+ would repel the neutral H2O molecule more than the A-.
