Should I begin my SOP with a related short quote?

Oishi Ganguly

Question

SOPs are basically essays, although professional, so if it's a quote that is related to my subject, is it such a bad idea to start my SOP with a quote? I thought it would draw the reader in but I would like some other opinions.

I suggest avoiding that. SOP`s should try to mimic or emulate scientific discourse as much as possible. The tone should be objective. The admissions committee is looking to evaluate if you can master the protocol of research, this is why I suggest staying away from anything too flowery or personal. Hope this helps!
