ddsdevil Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 I know that the job market is scarce in colleges/seminaries. Is it as scarce in middle/high school? Will an M.Div be enough to get a job teaching religion in high school or would one also need a ThM?
sacklunch Posted September 1, 2010 Posted September 1, 2010 No idea about the number of jobs available, but I know several people who taught religion at Catholic high schools with only a BA. Hell, I have heard some schools hire people with a BA not even in theology. This was in the midwest/west coast.

You'll have a much easier time finding an opening without any teaching experience. There are relatively fewer graduate theology programs in California (Bay Area excluded, of course), so those degrees tend to stand out a bit more.
Sparky Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Also, if your undergrad degree is in something else AND you have a master's of some sort in theology, one thing you could look into is teaching your undergrad subject at a Catholic high school while serving as youth minister/spiritual guidance person. Several people in my old MA program were there to do this sort of thing. It makes you more marketable. Out of my BA religion "graduating class" (13 students), I think three of them are teaching high school religion with no more than a BA.
