Hi folks!

I would like to apply to PhD programs in statistics for entry in the Fall of 2023. I am interested in some advice about making a school list.

Undergraduate Institution: Top 10

Major: Math

GPA: 3.87

Background: Domestic Asian Male

Related Coursework:

-Undergraduate Level: MV Calc (A+), Linear Eq and DiffEq (A+), PDE (A+), Proof based Linear Algebra (A), Statistics (B), Complex Analysis (A), Probability (A-), Mathematical Statistics (A+).

-Graduate Level:  Analysis I (B+), Analysis II (B+), Abstract Algebra I (A-), Abstract Algebra II (A), Measure Theoretic Probability Theory (A-), Big Data Analytics (A)

-Independent Study in stochastic processes.

Research:

-Statistical Physics and simulations of loop erased random walks Loop Erased random walks (LERW). Looked at SLE's of the six vertex model and related it back to its height function. Did computational work to confirm the hausdorff dimension of Loop LERW. Used simulation to verify conjectures about the lengths of LERW before a specific hitting time.

-Non parametric statistics. Basically tried to replicate the Cross match test with different hyper graphs. Got some interesting preliminary results.

Work Experience:

-Machine learning summer internship for financial services institution.

Letters of Rec: tentative

Measure theoretic Probability Theory prof

Mathematical statistics prof

Linear Algebra prof

School List:

Reaches: UCLA, UW, Penn, UChicago, Duke

Rice, Brown,  - don't really know where else to apply?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I would add more schools in the 5-15 range (NC State? Carnegie Mellon? Michigan?) as I suspect that is about the range where you will be competitive. With your profile, I don't think it would be a waste of time applying to a top 3 program.
