My e-mail came from "helpdesk" too, which really freaked me out so I had to read the e-mail a few times to make sure I really won. Congrats winners and HMers, and for the disappointed folks out there, good luck on other fellowships, and if you're eligible, definitely try for this one again, it sounds like people have met with success the second-time around.

I'm a first year grad student who's already funded for the next 6.5 years guaranteed and go to a great school. How many people here are already in funded phd programs and this was totally a bonus?

How many people here are already in funded phd programs and this was totally a bonus? i'm in a phd program already, but my funding only lasts through my second year. maybe my dept will smile upon my honorable mention and help a girl out, you know? nobody else in my department applied for any external funding. damn rich kids...
Guest guest Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I am in a funded program, but at my school generally that means you have to do a research assistantship or TA some classes to earn your stipend, though I had a fellowship for the first year. So, winning the NSF means I will have more time to work on my own research projects and not worry about working for my stipend, which is great.

Guest Ben Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Somehow I actually got the award. I can't really believe it, since I was rejected from 4 of 5 of the top schools in my field (Computer Science). I'm curious if anybody else has had any success (or knows somebody who has) in reversing rejections because of things like this.
Guest guest Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 ben, i would definitely check with each individual department about that. i know that some programs do not care whether students get outside funding--for example, from what i have been told, the math dept. at stanford is given funding for a certain number of students from the dean of the university, and if any student comes in with outside funding, a student's worth of funding has to be returned by the dept. to the dean. thus, the dept. makes it's decisions independent of outside funding since it doesn't make a difference to them financially. of course, the situation may be different in other departments or at other universities, particularly public universities which tend to have less money. good luck!

I couldn't believe it, because when I applied last year I didn't even get Honorable Mention.

I am still just smiling randomly for no apparent reason, I can still hardly believe it happened after wanting it for so long. Always have to look for difficulties, though - I am not sure how to break the news to my classmates, I'd rather tell them than have them hear from a faculty member or the department, but I don't want to make them feel bad if they didn't win. Any suggestions?

Any suggestions? Well, oddly enough, it appears as though most of my classmates have won, too! I'm completely shocked at how well our department is doing so far (I haven't heard everyone's news yet.) I'm not sure what the best way to break it to them is. If they're good people, though, they should be happy for you even if they are also a little jealous.

Guest guest Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 I've been wondering about that - maybe there weren't as many applications this year as last year? They said approximately 1000, so I assume there is always some play in the number, but I would have expected it to be closer to 1000. It's odd that the number is so random - 907 - too, so it makes me feel there may be a formula based on number of applicants? Anyone know how to find out how many total applications there were this year?
ophiolite Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 There have been budget cuts to NSF in general, but I have no clue where the cuts are focused or anything like that... I also don't know how many people applied this year... But there is something unsettling to me... In my specialty NOBODY won an award. Geoscience - Geology had no Fellowships awarded to them, and only 14 HMs. The only Geology-type fields represented were 1 award to Geochemistry and 2 to Geophysics. All other Geoscience awards were given to environmental and meterology-type fields. Oh well, doesn't make me feel so bad now that I didn't win (not that I was beating myself up anyway).
Guest guest Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 maybe it has to do with the number of applicants, then. which is annoying. i was an honorable mention, and maybe that 100 or so award decrease made a difference for me... i got my javits rejection letter today. there were only 700 applicants, which strikes me as rather low. perhaps fewer people are applying for fellowships in general this year?

I have funding at any place I'd consider--but I want to see if this changes anyone's mind about admitting me. I think I should politely ask directors of graduate studies. suggestions?? I am not sure of the best way to approach this, but know I need to act quickly if I want to reverse any decisions.
Guest Guest Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 Does anybody feel like the NSF was disproportionately given to students of one or two programs? In political science, 5 out of 9 went to Berkeley students despite the fact that Berkeley is a dying program. There was also a bias toward Berkeley last year too. Do they give special priority to people at schools with less funding or something?
