There don't seem to be a lot of musicians reporting; wondering where y'all applied, to what discipline, and if you've heard?

I'll go first. I'm in music theory applying for a PhD, applied to too many schools to name, had interviews with two but no notifications from anyone else.

Hey! I applied to 7 ethno/musicology programs, interviewed with one but haven’t heard from any of the others

The one I interviewed with yesterday said they don't usually make offers until mid-late February. Based on prior years, I think a few programs will be sending out first-round invitations at the tail end of January.

I'm applying to theory programs as well. Five schools, probably a subset of all the same ones you're applying to. So far I've done one interview and I have a second one coming up. A third school sent an auto-generated notice that they're looking at applications and expect to make decisions in mid-February (I think they don't do interviews, based on what people have said in past years). I doubt I'll hear anything else for several weeks, even if it's all good news.

Trying not to worry too much about it, but the waiting and uncertainty are going to give me an ulcer.

For sure. I just wish there were clear timelines from each school ? And one of my schools suddenly extended their deadline to March! Not sure if/when I will hear from that one at this point.

Are you the other Michigan interview on the results page?

Which one is that?

Yes

UC Santa Barbara. Not sure what's going on, happened to see it on their website.

Yes

I'm curious how it'll go. They assigned me a really weird/random time.

At this rate I would kill for any nugget of news, even a rejection. I can't imagine having to wait till March to get any news from a school.

For Michigan I'm guessing they scheduled a bunch of people for 20 minutes each with 5 minutes in between.

Yeah, probably. I don't love the way some schools (not just Mich) are just like "we want to interview you at this time" instead of "which of these times would work." My semester is about to start, so I'd really rather have the options to work around my schedule.

Yeah. Hoping to have an offer in hand by the time I hear anything from them at this point. Would also love any news from the rest of my programs. I have a few reaches, not really even expecting an interview from them, but would really like that solidified.

Music majors! Applied to four musicology programs, two films programs. I haven’t heard anything from anyone regarding applications (didn’t apply to any schools with reporting). Glad I’m not alone. I was just beginning to assume I was rejected from everywhere! ? Sending good vibes on everyone’s apps!

Yeah, I think every program has a different timeline, so it's hard to know how to interpret silence. It's not quite late enough in the process yet that it's rational to worry if you haven't heard anything (not that that stops any of us).

Some music theory programs want to test your keyboard and aural skills as part of the admissions decision, so they'll tend to send things out earlier. At the more academics/research-focused programs, I'm guessing some of them haven't even opened my application yet. Obviously musicology is a whole different animal.

Good luck with your applications!

I'm thinking some of the delay might be because of different academic calendars? I can see some of these places not touching apps until the spring semester starts.

Hi all, applied to 15 composition programs, 4 interviews so far (2 have happened, 1 school had a very lengthy process as a finalist), 1 waitlist so far. So waiting to hear anything from 10 more. The waiting is the worst part.

That's what Tom Petty always said.

We're almost through January. I expect we'll see a lot more movement over the next couple weeks. Hang in there everyone!

I've just finished my 3rd interview. No responses from any (about 2 weeks since the first one has passed). Radio silence from 7 programs, got an automated email from the Graduate School at one that I "passed preliminary screening and my materials will be sent to the appropriate department," but I don't know that it means much.

Absolutely. I keep getting my hopes up for one of the programs because the door is ever so slightly open since I've not been 100% rejected.

Getting nervous because a few of my schools have historically sent out first-round interviews by now but I haven't heard anything ?

saw someone claimed waitlist for uchicago on results page, same here.  beyond grateful to be on the waitlist but the anxiety is now remaining through the roof!!

Musicology: I applied to 4 programs, 2 due Dec 15, 1 due Jan 2, and one due Jan 23. I haven't heard a peep. Ugh! I saw someone got offered an interview at UPenn....

UPenn or Yale

Not from Yale, but I saw on the results page that a few folks got accepted at UPenn.

I saw the one right after I posted, but I am just looking at musicology. A bit disappointing...I literally just had my Columbia interview and they were like "oh were worried about being late compared to our colleagues" and I had to bite my tongue to say that no where else I've applied had put out anything!

Has anyone heard anything from Harvard, Berkeley or Columbia for Ethnomusicology? Keep seeing stuff for general musicology, but ?‍♀️, pretty much radio silence otherwise
