rs_nucl Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 (edited) You should check the admission criteria. Some universities specify a minimum of 4.0 on analytical writing (example penn state, u.maryland requires 4.5 and 1200<). Your GRE score is fine for engineering schools. But I think you should practice analytical section and get 4.0+. There is a grading software on the ETS website that you can use to practice. It is the same software used to score your writing section of the real test. The charge is 15$. It is fairly accurate. Edited September 23, 2010 by rs_nucl
Manoj_Rocky Posted September 23, 2010 Author Posted September 23, 2010 So you mean i Give another Shot at GRE to improve my analytical score. Or can i have a possibility of getting in the universities i have mentioned.
rs_nucl Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 It would serve you well to take the gre again. I think you would have a strong profile due to your work experience. But you can check with admissions dept about min. requirements for the program you are applying to. If you just took the GRE recently, it should not be too hard maintain the verbal and math scores, and you could just concentrate on the analytical writing. Should take 15-20 days tops to prepare. The topics for the analytical are also on the ets website. So you mean i Give another Shot at GRE to improve my analytical score. Or can i have a possibility of getting in the universities i have mentioned.
Manoj_Rocky Posted September 23, 2010 Author Posted September 23, 2010 Thank for your comments rs_nucl i will consider taking GRE again. But with this score do i still have a chance at NCSU or ASU for FALL 2011 ? Which other universities in my list could you tell to be safe according to my current profile ?
rs_nucl Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 If you are applying to the MS program, I think you would have a good chance at: NCSU University of Arizona University of Irvine North Dakota State University As you are aware, the economy in the US is slow at this time. Therefore, a number of qualified applicants (with work experience or professional aspirations after college) will be a lot greater. Just something to consider.

rs_nucl Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 So there will be a tough competition this fall2011, maybe. . Which other univ's would you suggest for safe list ?? I am not very certain about CS programs (you need to consider if the program is conducting research that matches your interest). Based on US News stats, these are some unis to consider: Michigan State University University of Illinois--Chicago Northeastern University University at Buffalo--SUNY Syracuse University Oregon State University University of Tennessee--Knoxville University of Delaware University of Connecticut Some one pursuing masters in CS or with undergraduate background would be better equipped to handle this question.
Manoj_Rocky Posted September 27, 2010 Author Posted September 27, 2010 (edited) Oh ! Ok , So i better start checking out these universities too... Thanks rs_nucl Edited September 27, 2010 by Manoj_Rocky
newms Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 Are you interested in a research based MS or a terminal MS? If it's research based, what area are you interested in? Those schools are good schools to look at, but you really need to look out for which schools match the research area you are interested in. It will be difficult to gain acceptance if your interests don't match up well with the research at that university.

Hi newms, I am plannin to do a research based Masters in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Can you filter out the universtiies from the list i have mentioned above and also indicate my approx. chances of getting in to them...... regards, Manoj
newms Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 For a research based Ms, the most important thing they will look at is your research experience, more so than your GRE scores, so it's hard for me to say which schools you would have a good shot at without knowing your research experience or interests. But for AI, UC Irvine is good, so are Oregon State, UIUC (top 10 school) and Georgia Tech (top 10 school). I'm not sure about the other schools.

But i didn't have a chance to do my research in undergarduate level , except for my final year project. I am presently working in an Indian MNC. If you say , universities would look in to my previous research experience , what do you mean ?
newms Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 I mean that universities look to see if you have research experience, especially the top 10 schools. They want to see that you have an idea of what research involves and that you know how to do it. If you don't have research experience, all is not lost, but you will now have to convince them that you know how to do research and that you are very motivated to research your field. You will have to do this in your SoP by detailing what research you want to do in grad school. An excellent resource on how you can do this is located here: http://matt.might.net/articles/how-to-apply-and-get-in-to-graduate-school-in-science-mathematics-engineering-or-computer-science/
Manoj_Rocky Posted October 11, 2010 Author Posted October 11, 2010 Thank you ! I find that every enitity plays a vital role in the admission process. . . So my Sop had to deal with my areas of interest with a comment on a recent finding / work in my area of intertest. This is a very usefull point , thank you fellas.
