leb Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Hi! I'm having a hard time finding school that is a good fit for me. I have an MA from UNLV (4.0 when I graduated), where I did my undergrad, and I want to go for my PhD someplace else. My interests are literary theory and victorian book illustration (especially children's books/ fairy tales), and comic books (image/text). My thesis is on the illustrations of a children's book from 1889 by Oscar Wilde. The MA from UNLV is kind of a blight on my CV, but I think that if I could find a school that fit my interests really well, it might not matter. I'm happy to move anywhere, US, UK, or Canada. Any ideas? Thanks! Lea
Sparky Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Who are your favorite scholars in your subfield? Who has written the major secondary works on Victorian picture books? Whose work have you cited in *all* your papers? Find out where they teach. Look at the lit reviews at the beginning of the articles you cite, or in the footnotes. Where do *those* scholars teach?

augustquail Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 It would probably be easier to start your search by finding programs that have excellent constellations of victorianists. That way, once you have a larger list, you can narrow it down based on who might have other faculty working in children's lit/graphic novels.
greekdaph Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Check out Indiana-Bloomington. Great Victorian program, and the library has a big collection of children's books: http://www.indiana.edu/~liblilly/overview/lit_child.shtml
