I had the GRE test taken about 9 days ago. When I inquired over the phone, I found that my AWA score has been abysmally low 3.0, with v630 and Q740. My school ( for Masters degree) ranks quite high although I have not received my transcript yet.

I wanted to apply for PhD, pol sci; in schools that rank 20-50, all US.

Now I am quite disheartened. I would appreciate your advice whether to wait for another year or give it a try (resitting the GRE, not applicable this time). Does anyone share such an experience where you have low AW score (as mine) but still managed to get into good schools ?

Thank you

I think your verbal and quantitative score is within the range of acceptance. I think AW scores should not be a problem at 20-50 universities esp. if there is a writing sample and LORs will not say that you cannot write. maybe someone has a close info though.

Common opinion is that the AW is the least important facet of your application. If you are confident with the rest of your portfolio, apply despite the score. Your SoP and writing samples will give the adcomm a peek at your writing and analytical ability, so just take the opportunity to prove the exam wrong.

Thank you for your comments and I think I'll go with the majority and give it a try; doing my best to make the SOP better. I was just wondering if it there is anyone who have gotten into a program despite low AW.
