Artist1 Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 I'm applying to Yale for MFA Painting (deadline tomorrow!). It says to include one representational image in your one page statement. I wanted to hear from anyone that has applied in the past or is applying - of how they included their image? Did you just have a second page of the pdf or word doc with a large image...... or smaller thumb on the front page?
Arsolo Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 I made a PDF that included the image at the bottom of the statement (so, smaller thumb on the one page).

Artist1 Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 My work is large scale though, so if i make a small thumb you won't see the image clearly. I am concerned about including it on a second page, if i am only to have a one page statement. I made a PDF that included the image at the bottom of the statement (so, smaller thumb on the one page).

The image included in the statement is also supposed to be in your portfolio, where a larger/clearer/better version of it should be. I'm assuming the inclusion in the statement is just a reference so they don't have to look back at the portfolio specifically to know which work is your representative work. Do what you feel most comfortable doing, though. The only people that can truly answer your question is Yale. Maybe see if you can call tomorrow and ask someone?

I called Yale and spoke to a woman who said the representative image isn't actually required on the statement. She told me that I only need to check the box on the online portfolio. Overall I think this is a pretty trivial issue. I doubt they would disqualify a strong candidate simply because you put an image on the same page as your statement, put it on a separate page, or didn't include it with the statement at all. It's in the school's interest to admit the best applicants.
waiter Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 I forgot to check the box for m y representative image, did she say that it was really important on the phone? I'm going to try and email them. She didn't specifically say that it is really important. I'm not exactly sure what they do with that representative image. I should've asked.
Kaelynn Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 yeah, somehow i don't think this is an important issue. portfolios are what they look at until they've narrowed their applicants to a much smaller pool, you know what i mean? and yes, there's an option that you check on the online submission. and if you didn't, then call them and tell them you forgot. don't sweat it!
