RockDenali Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 After watching how acceptances and rejections get posted on here, I've decided that Adcomms function the same way a literary magazine does. I worked on one a few years back, and basically we would do rounds. After even a brief read-through, we knew which stories we would DEFINITELY accept and which stories we would DEFINITELY reject. So we would notify those people early, for better or worse. Then it was a matter of further reading, debate, and more and more rounds. So small batches of acceptances and rejections would get sent out every few days. This seems to correspond to how most graduate programs send out their acceptances and rejections: in short bursts of good and bad news. Kinda like getting picked for dodge ball, too. So, if you haven't been officially rejected or accepted, it means you weren't a SHOE-IN but nor were you a HELL NO. You're in the next round is all . . . Of course, I could be way off base about all of this
snappysorbet Posted February 11, 2011 Author Posted February 11, 2011 (bump!) I've seen a bunch of rejections on the results board for UW-Madison but I can't tell if they're for Lit or Rhet/Comp applicants... anyone here heard anything?
murkyama Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 My application still shows up as pending and I am in rhet/comp.
snappysorbet Posted February 11, 2011 Author Posted February 11, 2011 (edited) My application still shows up as pending and I am in rhet/comp. Good to know. I have no idea what my login info is so I have to call later today so I can access the website; ugh. Thanks for the update! edit: just checked it; mine is still pending too. Fingers crossed. Seecen One Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 There was also a singular post about Berkeley reporting a Feb 9 acceptance via phone. Has anyone else heard from UCB? Good to know. I have no idea what my login info is so I have to call later today so I can access the website; ugh. Thanks for the update! edit: just checked it; mine is still pending too. Fingers crossed.

snappysorbet Posted February 12, 2011 Author Posted February 12, 2011 Do you think the rejections were for literature folks? That's what I'm thinking, and the rhet/comp folks will know soon. But who knows, really?

snappysorbet Posted February 16, 2011 Author Posted February 16, 2011 Congrats to the owner of the recent NC State CRDM acceptance.. that looks like an amazing program.
grifter Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 is it just me, or does it seem like rhet/comp adcoms are taking their sweet time? lit folks are all abuzz, but my mailbox/inbox.......nada......[crickets crickets].....tumbleweed rolls past......

Well, I think waiting seems endless for everyone. But I'm getting quite antsy too. I have a nice offer in hand already-- I just want to hurry up and get rejected from the other schools so I can get used to the idea of moving to Kentucky.

Nice offer from Louisville--best Comp/Rhet stipend in the country, right? Or close...And talk about a fantastic city (imho). Well done. I'm sort of in your boat--completely happy with moving back to Ohio, just waiting for other rejections so i can move on.
Chris83 Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Louisville's stipend is very generous-- it's a 2-2 load, though. I sort of feel like I've lost any right to complain, and I've heard Louisville is a great place to live. I think at this point I'm headed to Kentucky unless by some miracle Purdue or UT Austin decide they want me. Congrats on your acceptance, too.

Hi did you get accepted into Miami University's program? I have heard nothing from them Thanks.
grifter Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Hi did you get accepted into Miami University's program? I have heard nothing from them Thanks. hey there--I should have clarified that I was accepted into Miami's program as an internal applicant in the 2009 application season (for admission in Fall 2010) and I chose to defer enrollment until this year. From my understanding, they still haven't notified their applicants. No worries....

Absolutely one of the most beautiful campuses!! Impressed. And there is this amazing professor LuMing Mao. He is a nice person and a respected scholar. I applied primarily because of him. But now I am not sure,if admitted,if I would go. I have two offers from UCLA and Oregon. BUT the more I think of the campus and Professor Mao,the more appealing Miami becomes to me,not to mention other wonderful things of the program. LuMing is one of the reasons I am [most likely] going back there. He was my thesis advisor/life coach. Love that man. And like you said, gorgeous surroundings, easy pace of life...I adored it there. Congratulations on you other acceptances, and best of luck with the remainder.

He is a true inspiration. I read his book that uses Chinese fortune cookie as a sort of synecdoche. Original, insightful and a brilliant execution of theories. I would strongly recommend him to anyone who wants to study rhetoric, esp.comparative rhetoric and minority rhetoric. Life coach?? He even takes up that job? Even more impressive!
murkyama Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Just wanted to check in with Rhet/Comp folks and see how admits were coming along. Have you been accepted to a program or programs? How many places are you waiting to hear back from?

So far I've gotten one acceptance and three rejections (see signature), and as some of you know from looking at my original list, I applied to many, many more programs, so I'm just waiting to hear back from the rest of them. I'm surprised that I heard from those four so early, and haven't heard anything since.I've seen results from some of my other programs on the results board, but when I've checked my status at those schools it has remained the same. At this point the only thing to do is wait, but honestly, if the only school I get into is NC State, I will be totally happy. How have your results been so far?

How many places are you waiting to hear back from? I have been really lucky so far-- no rejections yet, but I'm sure I'll get some soon. I'm waiting on U of A, U of WA, Purdue, and UT-Austin. I'm waiting on funding info from ASU, and I've gotten a nice offer from Louisville. It's nice to know I'll be going somewhere, at least. How about you?
murkyama Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 I've received three rejections and one acceptance so far. So, getting that one acceptance was a load off my shoulders.
grifter Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 In addition to what is indicated in my sig, I'm still waiting for Washington, Oregon, Carnegie Mellon, and UofArizona...
cesada Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 LuMing Mao just interviewed for a job at UCI... no idea if he's moving or not. You should ask before making a decision though.
Rhet Man Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Hello! This is my first time in this thread, which I suppose I should've looked for before I looked for individual schools first. I have been waitlisted by two programs I'd be thrilled to go to and have been rejected by two. Still waiting on three others. Obviously, this is a bit stressful... Details in my signature.
