Rhet Man Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 In addition to what is indicated in my sig, I'm still waiting for Washington, Oregon, Carnegie Mellon, and UofArizona... 1. Congrats on getting a maybe from Wisconsin-Madison...I got a flat decline. 2. We are in a very similar boat: I too am waiting on Washington and have been waitlisted by Carnegie Mellon. We should definitely keep in touch.

Once the whole picture is in place, let's talk.
RockDenali Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Who else out there has heard from U of Arizona? I just saw an acceptance in someone's handle . . . Oh, and I just posted an acceptance on the results board: Case Western English (Writing History and Theory).
Chris83 Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Congrats on Case Western. I quietly added my U of A acceptance to my status....pm me if you want any details. I'm starting to get all paranoid about posting specific details on this forum.

RockDenali Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Seconded on the Arizona pm... Thanks gents. (Gents? I think?). And I definitely understand the paranoia . . .
Rhet Man Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Absolutely. Once the whole picture is in place, let's talk. Ah, the whole picture...yeah, that'll be beautiful.
snappysorbet Posted March 10, 2011 Author Posted March 10, 2011 Hey everybody, just wanted to bump this and see how you're all doing. Everybody surviving the wait period ok? I know it's still early, but anybody made any final decisions? I said "no" to one of my schools yesterday, and I have to admit, it was sort of a strange feeling...
Rhet Man Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 My personal update: I have been waitlisted by two programs which I would be thrilled to get into. . It's wonderful to get feedback saying you're in the "cream of the crop" category...I just hope that somehow my creamy croppiness actually gets me into a program.
runonsentence Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Hi All, Coming late to this party, glad to see a group of rhet/compers. Just stumbled across not only this thread, but this entire board for the first time while trolling the Internet in desperation tonight. Still haven't heard anything from SEVEN of my schools! Here's where I applied (in deadline order), with decisions boldfaced: Michigan State (rejected)Ohio State (rejected)Wisconsin-MilwaukeeUNC Chapel HillLouisvillePenn StateOhio UMiamiCincinnati (accepted; this is also my current MA institution)Georgia State Anyone else had news from these schools? I think one or two of you just mentioned Louisville decisions? I heard tale of UNC-CH and UW-M decisions elsewhere on the board...is that primarily lit, or have some of you heard rhet/comp decisions from those programs, at this point? I know Chapel Hill is rolling decisions, but I'm wondering if it's worth starting to email/call around. Anyway, good luck to everyone else with hearing back, and congrats for those who have been posting acceptances!
murkyama Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 runonsentence: I was accepted to UW-Milwaukee for Rhet/Comp. Just FYI. Congrats on your acceptance! I know someone that got a first round rejection from Louisville, so if you haven't heard anything back that might be a good thing.

At this point, I'd even welcome 7 rejections over all this waiting.
Rhet Man Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Just received acceptance materials from Univ. of Washington-Seattle. Cloud nine (even if funding info wasn't specifically included). Best of luck to all!
runonsentence Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Yes, congrats! Also, I see that you're still waiting on OSU—that might mean you're still in the running there, they send out some notices pretty early (I got my rejection in early Feb).
Rhet Man Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Thanks to you both! Runon...I don't think I'm still in the running for OSU. My status changed from "incomplete" (transcript missing) to "canceled" (which, while it's very strange wording, doesn't sound like it could possibly be positive).

My status changed from "incomplete" (transcript missing) to "canceled" (which, while it's very strange wording, doesn't sound like it could possibly be positive). Hah I suppose you're right. That is extremely odd. Well, if you decide you're curious enough to get in touch with the program, I've emailed the coordinator before about some missing materials in my application (discovered a week after the deadline that I hadn't sent a transcript from my current institution!!) and she was BEYOND friendly and kind. Also, speaking of odd, Milwaukee's PAWS has been telling me for weeks that my application is complete and sent on to the department...but now it tells me that it needs a copy of my transcript with a posted degree from my current institution. This seems strange, since I'm still in-progress and won't have the degree posted on my transcript until this summer. Hope you both hear about funding soon (especially given recent turmoil). It's a nice program, my mentor went there for her PhD and said they have a good range of opportunities and people to work with.

However, I'm far enough along in my communications with OSU (which I won't go into too much, let's just say they've been flawed) that I'm willing to say "I sent a formal status update inquiry a week ago. I'll keep waiting." That's the extent of my curiosity.
runonsentence Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 (edited) I'm really hoping to get some good news about funding from Milwaukee; I like the program a lot. But I'm still confused about the whole PAWS thing... how to you get there? It's their online system that, like everything else about their website and application process, is entirely counter-intuitive. (I mean, seriously—I didn't realize until after I'd submitted the application that they had differing GRE reqs for Comp/Rhet because it was buried another 3 pages behind the rest of the reqs that apply to all applicants. The program looks great, but their website and application are both SO disorganized.) I got a hardcopy letter dated December 16th that gave me ID numbers for logging into their online system (Panther Access to Web Services; PAWS). It's signed by the director of grad student services, so if you're curious enough to want access, I'd give the Grad School a ring. (The website is www.paws.uwm.edu, but you need to log into www.epantherid.uwm.edu first to set up a password, and you'll need two different IDs from the letter...) murkyama Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Hey murkyama, I was just accepted to UW-Milwaukee for Rhet/Comp, too... any idea about funding? I'm thrilled, obviously, but I want more info! I have no clue about funding. I wish I had news to report, but I am completely in the dark. Have you heard anything by chance? On another board a GradCafe member posted that a friend that attends UW-Milwaukee didn't hear about funding until April. It's such an attractive program, but I am concerned about the long haul and budgets given what is happening up there right now with the stripping of collective bargaining rights. I am curious how (if it will) affect funding for doctoral work at public institutions in the state.

I am curious how (if it will) affect funding for doctoral work at public institutions in the state. Given the situation there, I'm concerned as well, and in all my mad googling and gradcafe searching I actually saw that same comment about funding and April. I know a few people who earned their PhDs at UWM, one from the English dept, the other in Education, I believe, so I'm going to be getting their thoughts on the situation up there and try to piece together some understanding of how it will effect (affect? I can never remember) us. But to answer your original questions: no, I haven't heard anything about funding. I'll spread the news as soon as I know anything about anything.
runonsentence Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 I can't tell you how many programs didn't tell me I was on their waitlist until I emailed them. Just finished a busy morning of emailing, and found out that I'm waitlisted at Miami (but little/no hope of an offer, so pretty much a rejection), UNC-CH, Louisville, and Ohio University. Penn State and Georgia State have seemed fairly quiet so far. One of my mentors has a contact at GSU, he's going to ask when they expect to make decisions, in case this helps anyone else. Got into Milwaukee, though! Now I have two to decide between!
murkyama Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 I just got my letter from Milwaukee, and while I have been admitted I didn't get any funding. Bummer.
