Hi everyone!

I am posting this to get opinion on how competitive I will be for PhD in Biostatistics/Statistics program. I would greatly appreciate if you can help me getting ideas on the school range I should apply. Below is my profile.

  • Undergraduate: Animal Science (3.88 out of 4.0 GPA) - Asia
  • Master: Nutrition (working in animal nutrition field) (3.72 out of 4.00 GPA) - Big 10 School

I took all the prerequisites + STAT classes while I was in my master program. Following are the details:

  1. Math Dept: Calc 1 (A), Calc 2 (A), Linear Algebra (A-), Calc 3 (B), Proof Writing (B-), Real Analysis (B)
  2. Stat Dept: Data Science - Freshmen level (A), Stat and Prob 1 (A-), Modelling I (A-), Modelling II (A-), Stat Programming in R (A), Advanced Data Analysis in SAS (B), Bioinformatics - Grad level (A+)
  3. Misc:  Applied Stat Method - Agriculture Department (A), Intro to Epidemiology (A)

I took those classes in about 1.5 years. At the moment, I am more heavily leaning to Biostatistics programs as I really want to use my biological knowledge. However, I am also wondering if I also should apply to Statistics programs cause some of them have Biostatistics option/focus once enrolled.

Thanks.

Have you applied to somewhere? If yes, were you accepted? I was curious about your background

does the school you took all those prerequisites at offer a Ph.D in Stats/Biostats? Do any of your Nutrition/Animal Science professors work with (bio)statisticians? People on the ground are who you want to talk to more than internet "experts" in my humble opinion. That being said some might be familiar with US schools reputations/faculty/culture which can help.

Check out UC Davis (competitive), Iowa State stats and University of Iowa for biostats, Nebraska (less competitive) and other schools that have cross-pollination between your undergrad +MS and potential Ph.D. I'd also through in bioinformatics programs too tbh.
