srs5050 Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Hello All-- Found out today that I've been accepted to NYU's 2 year MSW program. They are offering/estimating $7,000 per year of scholarship funding. Should I assume this is a low-ball offer and that they are expecting me to ask for more? Would appreciate any advice or experiences that might be helpful. I have not received any other acceptances but am keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks very much.
MSW11 Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 I would ask for more. It never hurts to try. At an info session, the Asst. Dean of Admissions for University of Michigan said never to hesitate to contact the school about your financial aid offer. They deal with this stuff all the time, as awkward as it may seem, I think you should ask. $7,000 isn't that much. I would be curious to know what you do when you have a good offer, but are curious to know if you can get more...not that I have an offer yet, but i would wonder about that myself.

I heard from multiple people that NYU isn't the most generous institution in terms of grants/aid/scholarships. To be honest I am surprised by the 7000K per year. Good luck and please post an update on any changes to your aid.
srs5050 Posted January 27, 2011 Author Posted January 27, 2011 I reached out to a friend who is finishing up her last term at NYU and she seems to think this is a pretty serious offer, based on what she's heard. No harm in asking for more, but certainly not making any decisions yet. I'll update if anything changes. Has anyone heard from UMich, U of C, or CSSW? I've heard that Berkeley and Hunter don't usually start sending decisions until much later.
audrey1018 Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Hi everyone, srs5050- Congrats on getting accepted to the MSW program at NYU. Would you mind telling me when you sent in your application? Thanks!
srs5050 Posted April 18, 2011 Author Posted April 18, 2011 Sure. I sent in my application on January 2nd heard of my acceptance on January 26th. I was alarmed at how quickly they came to a decision. Just as an update, I'm deciding between a few different schools but will attend Hunter if I decide to stay in New York and never asked NYU for more funding. A few people have gotten bigger offers than mine, so I definitely suggest lobbying for more money if it's your top choice. Good luck!
