Hi! Just curious to anyone who has been waitlisted at Western, has anyone gotten back any responses recently to where they are on the waitlist? Just curious to see how many people I can find are in each third!! Thank you!

Hi- I'm an undergraduate in second year looking ahead to apply to SLP. This forum has been super helpful for me looking ahead. For those that were successful in the admissions process - congrats! If you have any tips and advice, please DM me.  I have taken many prerequisites and I'm aware of the high sub GPA requirements which I think I can meet. I was wondering what a successful SOI looks like and was looking for tips in general since these programs appear to be super competitive. What do you think set you apart? I have relevant research experience lined up for the summer so I'm pretty excited about that !

SOI was the most challenging part for me, since the word count is so low. My advice would be to start early enough that you can get feedback from people (supervisors, mentors) and redraft redraft redraft until it feels right. Don't be afraid to talk about yourself and what makes you unique! The statement I ended with was much different than my first draft. Look at the mission/values of the programs and try to incorporate that into your letter.

It really helps if you have a relationship with a prof/research supervisor who can work through it with you. If you're in second year, I'd recommend trying to grow those kinds of connections now. It makes a big difference come application time if you have referees who know you well and are willing to support you throughout the application process. I felt confident about my referral letters + was even able to see a couple of them before submission, which was a big relief.

I'd also recommend trying to get some shadowing/volunteer experience early, since I think it will reflect positively if you can say you've been committed to getting to know the field for a few years.

I'm happy to share my stats + experience if you would find that helpful. It's really good that you're thinking ahead!!

ofc!! not sure what's most helpful so i'll try to list a bunch of things:

  • gpa: ~88%, sub-gpa: 92%. i chose to use the new 6 pre-reqs instead of the old 10
  • exp: currently an RA in a lab, volunteer under an SLP for an aphasia group, and volunteer/observe an SLP in a preschool
  • on my cv i also included my directed studies project, some (not really relevant?) co-op jobs, and other campus involvement (co-director for a conference, online tutoring)
  • i'm also a current UBC student so maybe that played a factor!

Hi Everyone! I just got accepted to UBC's Island Cohort and would love to connect with the others who are accepting! Has anyone made a group chat yet? Or if not I'm happy to make a discord or facebook for our cohort! I'm so excited!!!!! (Also if there is a UBC general chat that people have for our class I'm excited to join that too!)

Is anyone declining their offer from UBC? Just trying to see how much movement will be on the waitlist! Congratulations to everyone who got in!

If anyone needs a bit more information on McMaster to help with decisions, send me a message and I'll get back to you as soon as I can! We're on placement right now but I'm setting aside time to check my email for messages.
