2011focus Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Hey all. New to all this. I am applying to some schools for the Ph.D. program in Social psychology and I missed a lot of deadlines. Does anyone know of any schools still accepting applications for Fall 2011. Also, I will be taking Gre's in Feb 2011 and I need help knowing which formats i should take, i.e., the general and the psych test?? Some person posted that they had applied to many social psych programs that proclaimed that the GRE test was optional. Which programs are those and where are they located. The Social psych website isn't helping much. Hellp, email me chanson.ypc@gmail.com

I can't see a PhD program that doesn't need a general GRE, if there is one, its probably not worth going. and I can't speak for deadlines though, but if I had to guess, there aren't many schools that are still taking applications at this moment. You can possibly look at some masters that might take apps later. tauren and YA_RLY 2

There might be, but... outlook not so hot. All of my deadlines have passed. I think my lastest one was approximately January 5th. I'm a little surprised that you say you are unable to find the information about GREs. Every social psych program I applied to required the General GRE. All of the programs list this information somewhere on their site, often readily found on an FAQ section. I am wondering - are you thinking about the Psychology Subject GRE? That one does vary. Most Social Psych PhD programs do not require the Psych Subject test. Some say "highly recommended but not required." I hate to say this, but at this point, I really don't think this is something you can still get together. A lot of programs have online only applications that will not allow you to submit anything past the deadline. Furthermore, if you are not taking the GRE until February, it will be about 5 more weeks until any schools receive official scores. By the time March comes around, a lot of schools are done interviewing and are having recruitment weekends. Masters programs tend to have later deadlines, and you might be able to find one. I imagine it would still be quite the hustle. The application process is truly not something you can (easily) rush through. I'm inferring that you don't want to wait a year and apply. It can be very worth it. I decided to wait a year for a number of different reasons (including to raise a low GRE score), and I am glad I did. I have been admitted to one of my top choices. The extra year of planning and getting things together = so worth it.
a.arcane Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 I completely agree that applying at this late date will likely not yield success---especially since "fit" is very important in the search--and the most time consuming part of the search. Still I root for the underdog so...off the top of my head: http://www.psych.ndsu.nodak.edu/index.php?f=19 http://www.unr.edu/cla/socpsy/ Also the APA posts programs with remaining openings on their site after mid-April but I'm not sure if these are just clinical. I've been to the website of virtually every social psych department out there (thanks index of the APA Guide to Graduate Study). In general, the less prestigous the program, the later the deadline. I'd use something like this and start at the bottom http://www.socialpsychology.org/ranking.htm The other problem you mentioned is your GRE. Many schools will take unofficial scores (and transcripts) to consider you. Also, if we're talking about the general (not subject) GRE , I find it generally takes less time than suggested as schools frequently have electronic acceptance of scores. Though, in my experience the less popular programs with later deadlines, have less sophisticated admin systems--maybe because they get fewer apps. Good luck!
