I was wondering if funding cuts and similar issues have made people a bit more cautious. But how is your cycle going so far? I am applying to just one program, JHU- Implementation Science, and my deadline is coming up shortly, so I am focused on really tailoring my SOP and essays and getting these recc letters in. spiroagmew Posted January 6 Posted January 6 Chiming in super late: I applied solely to Emory's DrPH program (though got it in this morning, so probably won't be verified via SOPHAS by today's priority deadline. I really think federal funding cuts are going to absolutely slam DrPH programs this cycle. I was lucky enough to land a job tangential to the field after nine months of unemployment, but as a global health security person & former fed, whew boy - nearly everyone I know is still unemployed and definitely not in the position to be shelling out for a paid doctoral program. Though maybe I'm wrong and it will be super competitive since no one has anything better to do. PHCBM23 and aspiring_drph 1 1

It has definitely been a tough year for anyone in federal government or grant funded. Did Emory explicity state you needed to be both submitted and verified by the date or just submitted? spiroagmew 1

I saw it bolded in an email from them on December 19th (but of course not until after I submitted the morning of Jan 5th, womp womp - on me for not opening the reminder email). I wish I knew they had some funding available. Everything I saw said DrPH program weren't funded.

I don't remember it being mentioned in the info session I listened in on - a friend who's doing a PhD there flagged it for me and said it was a gift from the Rollins family. Otherwise I wouldn't have known either! It was $12k total for part-time and $25k total for full-time, so definitely generous and meaningful, but also definitely not full funding.
PHCBM23 Posted January 27 Posted January 27 I applied to GW and JHU and the Bloomberg Fellowship for Addiction and Overdose. Had my interview with GW last week and for JHU I don't think there is an interview as they emailed me that I will hear back in March. Anyone else?

I feel a bit of survivor's guilt but also hoping that applications are down this cycle because it seems like for the programs I applied to that you need to be employed.
aspiring_drph Posted January 28 Posted January 28 Finally getting back to this forum, life has been busy. Happy New Year! Yeah, I also noticed how quiet this application cycle is compared to last year. Funding must be a factor especially with how tough the economy is. Also, administrative influence closing programs and roles is seriously affecting people in our field. I pray and hope all is resolved soon. It's sad to see how politics is setting the US back by many years considering the public health advancements achieved steadily by other administrations. On to a slightly more positive note, congratulations on getting your application in. I wish you all the best! Lucky you won’t have to interview for JHU! I got through all my applications on time just waiting to hear next steps. I applied to the following programs: - GWU -Tulane -Emory - SUNY Downstate -SUNY Albany -New York Medical College. The main issue for school selections is program fitness. Many of these programs run like PhD programs and I'm not interested in research methodology work. I do enough of that in my current role as a data analyst for NYDOH. I am interested in transitioning into leadership roles where I can direct and influence urban planning with a public health Lense and strengthen healthcare systems through physical infrastructure. My focus area is very niche, but I believe GWU and Tulane's program are a good fit for my case. The wait has commenced. Hopefully in a few weeks’ time we will share all our acceptances. During my interview they told me that funding decisions will come 2 weeks after acceptance. JHU sent another update that decision will be out in early March and the Bloomberg Fellowship will be out mid-March. Both have acceptance deadlines of April 15. aspiring_drph 1
