CuriousRayurth6 Posted September 30 Posted September 30 Hi all. Wondering if Im competetive enough for this upcoming cycle. GPA is a little low at around a 3.6. Been volunteering with people with aphasia for aeound 2 years as well as completed some research with them and the university of Alberta. As well, I work for a professor in her lab who will be writing me a refrence letter hopefully as well as with another professort in the same lab. Not sure what else I am missing but I do not feel competetive or ready. I am aiming to have a publication by feb but unsure of the status on that. IS there anything else I can add on to make myself more competitive

IS there anything else I can add on to make myself more competitive I think it is always worth trying I would say GPA is fairly important though.. Every school has an extremely competitive pool of submissions. I have a 3.98 GPA and was rejected last year from the school I wanted and I have to reapply this year. I think if you can bump up your GPA with elective courses that would help your application! Also, if that publication can be added to your achievements, that would be a big deal too! Good luck! IS there anything else I can add on to make myself more competitive I think you should absolutely still apply. Some programs are more particular when it comes to GPA, and others weigh a lot more on your experiences and personality. Alberta, McGill, and Western, for example, weigh on the CASPer test, so that puts more of an emphasis on your writing and comprehension skills, while also evaluating your values and ethics. If you are already a student at UofA, or an Albertan resident, you'll already have a leg up with a higher likelihood of being considered for UofA, UBC, and UofSask's programs-- at least more so than others, as there will be a certain number of seats set aside for the West Coast students before others across Canada. If you are worried about not getting in this year, I would also advise that you apply to a CDA program as a backup option. It will give you some more experience in the field and make you stand out next time you decide to apply to SLP programs. It sounds like you have great experience to reflect on in your letters of intent. Make sure to really mention in these statements how passionate you are about this field. They don't just want a smart person-- they want someone who is going to be good at what they do AND love doing it. The last thing I would recommend is to maybe see if you can find a few hours here and there to work with a paediatric SLP. It's okay if aphasia clients are your end goal, but it will make you stand out if you are versatile and have a wider lens. Remember to take deep breaths. Applications can be so overwhelming and anxiety-inducing. The fear of rejection can be scary, but do not let that fear deter you from achieving your goals. And if all else fails, try and try again. We will not get where we want to be without facing some challenges along the way, and that will make you a stronger applicant, and a better SLP in the future.
JulieL Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Hi! Has anyone started their ORPAS application. I have a question about how to add Referee info. I know Uoft needs 2 academic references and Western needs 2 academic and 1 professional. On ORPAS when you go to enter the referees it doesn't seem to ask you which program/school you are selecting the referee for. So if I list 3 referees in ORPAS how do they know which 2 are for UofT. Am I missing something.
