fangsout Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Has anybody heard from Rice PhD program? I saw one post on the result section. Please post your stats (undergraduate institution, gpa, pub, research experience, GRE, CS GRE etc) if you have been interviewed or been accepted. I have not heard back from them yet, but I have applied. I talked extensively with a professor who seemed very interested in my application, so I am puzzled if other people are hearing results and I have not.
beanbagchairs Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Havent heard from them either. In another subforum --forgot which one--, someone posted that they received an interview request form the CS dept of Rice. Not sure about his/her area of interest though. I thought I have a decent shot at rice.. bummer
Cevo Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I have not heard anything either. @fangsout, mind sharing your research area?
gradSchoolBound Posted February 4, 2011 Author Posted February 4, 2011 If anybody is interested, my area is programming language and parallel computing. Their department is so small, probably 7-10 new admits a year. So, I am not very hopeful since I have not been contacted by any prof. yet.
newms Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 (edited) There was an admit on the board today. I'm not sure for who though. Rice University Computer Science & Engineering, PhD (F11) Accepted via E-mail on 4 Feb 2011 I 4 Feb 2011 Edited February 4, 2011 by newms
DamianD Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I had a skype interview about 1.5 week ago but haven't heard back from them since. The fact that somebody submitted that he/she was accepted doesn't improves my hopes of acceptance....

DamianD Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 (edited) DamianD, what's your area of interest? Math and AI (large-scale data mining and machine learning) however the interview was with the prof from physical computing and bioinf group, pretty weird situation, I don't know much about it.... But it was my SoP that interested them and they wanted to know about my interests and experience because I didn't wrote much (or anything about it) in my SoP so at least somebody liked it Edited February 5, 2011 by DamianD
DamianD Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 bump Rice UniversiryComputer Science, PhD (F11)Other via Other on 8 Feb 2011I8 Feb 2011Previously added admission on Feb 4th for Rice CS Ph.D was wrong. The graduate committee just sent an apology to me. My profile is still under review. Good luck to everyone. In case somebody isn't obsessively refreshing continuously like me :-(
pepsi Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 bump In case somebody isn't obsessively refreshing continuously like me :-( man it must really suck to have an acceptance taken away..
newms Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 man it must really suck to have an acceptance taken away.. I just saw that on the results board. That really is terrible - i hope they do eventually accept that poster.
DamianD Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 (edited) As harsh as it may sound I'm glad that there is more chance for me! Edited February 8, 2011 by DamianD

fangsout Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 @Cevo , My area is Parallel Programming I agree with opinions above. To have an acceptance taken away sounds just awful. I feel for the person it happened to. Here's to hoping they get admitted to their top choice!

I feel for the person it happened to. Here's to hoping they get admitted to their top choice! I just got a reply from a professor at Rice, whom I had been in touch with before applying. He informed me that they are at the last stage of making decisions, "finalizing them". So I believe Rice should be sending their acceptances soon.
DamianD Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 So I believe Rice should be sending their acceptances soon. Dang, I wish I didn't know that, now I'm back to continuously F5'ing :-(

Would they give out decision about that as well or they are only finalizing about Ph D
gradSchoolBound Posted February 9, 2011 Author Posted February 9, 2011 Did you get informed about the Master program? Would they give out decision about that as well or they are only finalizing about Ph D I don't know about masters. I have applied to their PhD program and my conversation with the prof. was pertaining to PhD program.
DamianD Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Can somebody send them an email that i'd like to receive the results tomorrow ;-) after the disappointment of mit rejection I'm still waiting for my first admit :'-)
DamianD Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Ok, so I got too anxious to wait any longer and decided to ask the prof I had the interview with on Skype about it and he said: "We are still working on it and haven't decided anything yet."
DamianD Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Did prof say when they are going to decide? Nope, but he didn't sound like it would be tomorrow or anytime soon (and with soon I guess tomorrow, the day after...)
gradSchoolBound Posted February 18, 2011 Author Posted February 18, 2011 No news yet. May be tomorrow. Friday sounds like a good day to announce results. Their website's FAQ says that the decision is usually reached by mid-February.
