I was told in an email that a decision had not been made either way on my application yet.

Did you email the DGS to get this info, or did they send an email on their own?

So they've already made their first round of offers?

Definitely. There are ~15 people with either acceptances or "upper level" waitlist notifications coming for visiting weekend the 17-18 March. But nobody's been officially rejected yet, so...who knows.

Is this like last year when they told about 50 people that they were at "the very top of the wait list"? Seriously--check out the results forum from last year. Post after post by people excited about owning the top spot on the UVA list. I don't know what they were thinking. If they knew about this website and they still did that to people, it's a little bit cruel.

Hmm... I was just looking at that -- I counted 7 waitlisted folks from last year. On the other hand, several people also got in off the waitlist and got late-breaking acceptances in April... I really hope they hurry it up and don't make us wait till April.

d'you think I should call them guys? because they're the last uni for me. I just got a job offer -- it's good for one year. If I don't have a chance of getting in I will definitely take the job offer... I need to know the decision quick, preferably before I sign the contract.

So, I decided to be annoying and call them. I talked to the grad secretary, who seems really friendly, and she said she thinks all decisions should be made by mid to late March. Okay, so that isn't terribly specific for those of us waiting, but at least it's something. Just thought I'd pass it along.

ETA: she also mentioned that the DGA is away for a few days, which I'm guessing means we won't hear anything in the next few days.

bumping this in case anyone knows anything new

This is the only place I still haven't heard anything from, and I'm wondering if they're close to doing their second round of admits/waitlists. I've got an offer I really want to take, but would like to hold off on accepting until I've heard something from UVA.

Ugh, I'm dying here! This is my last phd program. I'm pretty sure it's a reject, I'm not delusional. But I'd like to put it past me and know for sure. UVA is my dream program and I want to stop fantasizing that I get in there! ;)

Yeah, it's the last program I'm waiting to hear from as well, and even though I don't expect to get in, I'd like to get closure on it. I looked up their academic calendar and found that they're on spring break this week, which would explain why the DGA is away, but doesn't explain why the grad secretary was there when I called yesterday. Go figure. So basically, I think we probably won't hear anything until next Monday at the earliest, when they all come back from spring break. Hang in there!

You sure about that "nobody's been officially rejected yet" business?

Because if so, that is officially my least favorite thing about the process some of these programs use. Some other schools do the whole don't-reject-or-accept-a-huge-percentage-of-applicants thing and it's a bit...annoying, enervating, obtuse--dare I say, unethical? Blah. I'm with the "put me out of my misery if there's not reasonable chance for me" folks.

I'm a Master's student at UVa at the moment. I'm about as sure as I can be without being the DGA himself that they haven't rejected anybody yet. But as has been suggested, perhaps they're just waiting until after spring break. They did get over 500 applications this year, so I'm sure it took a while to sort through them all. But I'm with you. It's cruel to keep everybody waiting around, when obviously 470 people or so are just outright rejections.

Have they made all their offers though? I haven't seen any waitlists yet...

surely they can't send out acceptances without having looked through the whole lot? I mean, surely they look through everything and then decide which are acceptances, upper level waitlists, etc. In which case a sizable number of people would still be rejected -- they should let us know

They have made all their first-round offers. I'm sure of that. We're having an admitted students weekend and there are 15 or so admitted students coming along with a few from the upper reaches of the waitlist. So there is definitely already some kind of waitlist, though I think it's pretty short, and might be expanded following the visiting weekend.

I'm not saying they don't know who is rejected. I'm sure they do... or I'm sure they have a list of people who definitely aren't getting in. And like I said, I wish they'd hurry up and release that, too. But they probably have a multi-tier waitlist, like Vanderbilt (see the thread for Vanderbilt from a day or so ago), and perhaps like Vanderbilt they aren't going to notify everybody at once.

Are you suggesting that there are multiple visiting weekends?

No...not at all.

This is so depressing. I mean, we all know it's true (that there's a big pile of "definite rejects") but seeing it spelled out in so many words just makes the process seem so painful and dehumanizing...

Good luck to everyone who's waiting.

I second that!

Has anyone received any news recently? Still no word for me.

ditto. I have given up really.

I just received an email saying that I was put on the waitlist. Someone said the top waitlisters were invited to the visiting weekend so maybe I´m farther down on the list? The email said there are 12 funded spots this year. This is my top choice so hopefully some of the lucky admitted ones choose elsewhere!

Congrats on the waitlist! This probably means that rejections are on the way.
