HowByronic Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Hi, everyone. I'm the second person who was moved off the waiting list last night. I confirmed my acceptance with Dr. Braden this afternoon and will most likely be accepting the spot.
selden Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Thanks for posting and congrats to both of you! I'm also on the waitlist. Braden says it's not "linear," so I'm wondering if either of you can give any insight into how choices are made. For instance, is there one candidate waiting in the wings for each sub-field? That is, were you admitted because a previous 19th century lit candidate declined? You may not know this specifically, but I thought I'd check. Once again, congrats!
the giaour Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Selden, I think you're right that the wait list is by area. I know they want a well-rounded cohort and try to fill out all areas if it's at all possible. Probably not very much help to you, as it's what you already supposed, but that's been my impression. Thanks so much for all the well-wishes! Lyoness, I'm glad you feel like UM is a good fit--very happy for you! And congratulations to you, HowByronic--I sense a theme here. You wouldn't happen to be another 19th-centuryist, would you?
faton4paws Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I was the waitlist who posted yesterday evening; I was notified yesterday afternoon, and pretty much spent the day walking on air. Congratulations to everyone else, I'm looking forward to meeting you all! I did accept -- and I'm not gonna lie, I totally cried as well. I was completely incoherent with Prof. Braden on the phone, but I'm pretty sure he got the "Yes, yes, yes!" part. For everyone still waiting, my sense of things is that they are trying to get a rounded cohort, and that they want diversity. I know they had a melt rate of about 4 people so far, so I think there's probably another spot left? (Not sure, can't remember.) At any rate, I'm medieval, so I don't know if anyone else is (if so, hi!), and I'm sorry that I don't have too much for information for you. I definitely recommend contacting Prof. Braden. He is so kind and helpful, and I'm sure he'll let you know how things stand. If anyone else is in the area, I'll be checking out the university during the weekend of April 28th, so if you're around, let's meet up!
