Okay, so I did steal this idea from humanprovince in the Political Science thread, but only because I think it's a great idea.

What are you reading now, in preparation for grad school in the fall?

Some books in my to-read pile:

Cultivating Humanity- Nussbaum

Age of Empires- Hobsbawm

Age of Extremes- Hobsbawm

Discipline & Punish- Foucualt (re-read!)

Thanks everyone!

I've been out of school for so long that I need to start reading journal articles again. I've been reading for fun for the last 4 years. I have to relearn to read dense dry research.

And I wonder why I haven't gotten started on that.

I had asked my advisor for a reading list before I started. He gave me a three page list, lol!

I am reading a book called "Getting What You Came For: The Smart Student's Guide to Earning an MA or PhD" by Robert L. Peters PhD. It is a very easy and straightforward read that is chock full of common sense. Some of the topics are more germane for individuals who already working on a PhD but I am thinking it has sunk in and will resurface when I am approaching that milestone.

I wouldn't say I'm reading for preparation, but here is what I am currently working on:

The Lost Soul of Higher Education - Ellen Schrecker

Teachers as Cultural Workers - Paulo Freire

Lives on the Boundary - Michael Rose

You might also consider Not for Profit by Nussbaum. It's a quick read and you can mine its bibliography for a lot of interesting ed stuff.
