Hi,

I was announced of receiving a 3rd alternate TAship and being admitted to the University of South Florida Phd Program in Philosophy. I wonder If someone could explain me in detail what the "3rd alternate TAship" means. They also told me the common bla bla with "funding is scarce" but that usually after the first round of offers they end up funding the 3rd alternate. Now, as I come from the quite different European system - I don't specifically know what "3rd alternate" stands for. If anyone could give a hand, or maybe received a similar offer from USF - they're welcome. Thank you and good luck to everyone! Salvation is near! :P

I think it means that you are admitted, and are third on the list for funding (which you earn by serving as a T.A.). So, if three people ahead of you in line choose to go elsewhere, you will receive the T.A. position and a stipend.

Hope this helps,

Congratulations!

I'm in a similar situation at another school. What the above reply states is spot on. If the people ahead of you decline, you will be offered funding.
