  1. Benafflicted, Will you be attending FSU for graduate work? I'm thinking about accepting their offer.

My wife and I have lived downtown for the last two years and it's been pretty cool. We have a loft about 2 miles from SLU's campus. I happen to attend the graduate program at UMSL so I just walk down to the Metro and ride out to campus. It's been great. I hardly ever drive my car because of the convenience of the Metro. I've never felt unsafe here (and I ride the metro 3-5 days a week sometimes at night). There's security at most of the Metro stations. Most of the crime involves car-break-ins. At least once a month during the summer someone's car gets broken into on our street. We keep our car in a gated parking lot and we've had no trouble at all. There are plenty of affordable lofts/apartments/condos downtown if that's your thing and many are close to the metro.
  3. Your GRE verbal score is fine. It's not enough to help you but its not low enough to hurt you either. Your writing sample and LOR's are much, much more important so make sure they are excellent.
  4. Yeah I was looking at houses for sale on Craigslist and they were pretty cheap. I'm thinking of buying a fixer-upper and flipping it after grad school.
  5. I'm visiting later this month too. I'm pretty stoked but my wife doesn't like the idea of living in Tallahassee. She still has hopes for Austin;)
  6. Don't listen to people who go on about the GRE. It is not the final arbiter of your application. I have a friend who scored a 750V, 800Q and 5.5. He was shut out of PhD programs. The most important thing you can do is have a kick-ass writing sample and excellent LOR's from professors who know your work. The writing sample will be read if it is good. It will be thrown in the trash if it is trash. MA programs are great for people who have no philosophy undergrad (like me) or for people who came from programs that no one has ever heard of. But like many here have said, make sure you try to get into a funded position. I had to pay half my tuition my first semester and since then I've been fully funded (it wasn't much, but I was able to get through debt free). I now have one offer from a top 50 on PGR and a fellowship offer at a school not on the PGR, plus I'm still waiting to hear back from several top schools.
  7. I'm in the same boat. I've heard that they're working on the waitlist and it should be done early this week.
  8. They invited the top 14 applicants to a preview weekend last month. They've made the initial round of offers and waitlisted everyone else. I would contact the department to see if you're still in the running. I'll be taking myself off the waitlist since I've been admitted to other places. I hope that helps you out.
  9. Someone over at the 'who_got_in' forum said that Notre Dame should be making decisions at the end of next week. Allegedly.
  10. Mine's still pending. Might be BS.
  11. I'm in a similar situation at another school. What the above reply states is spot on. If the people ahead of you decline, you will be offered funding.
