Pending interview but wait listed

I was invited to a campus visit / interview with my POI earlier this year. We made arrangements to meet in March, but 2 days ago I received a notice letting me know I was wait listed. Could this possibly be because I haven't yet had my interview, or did my POI already decide to extend an offer to someone else? Similar stories?

It could be either of those suggestions, however an interview is a great chance to make a good impression on your POI and get yourself bumped up. You can always call and clarify before you go to the interview as well.
