neuropsych76 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I haven't been able to find much information about this school/program and I was wondering if anyone here has any insight. I know rankings don't mean much, but I can't even find a ranking for it. I'd be applying to their cognitive neuroscience concentration of their biosciences degree. Thank you for any advice on this school or schools which are unranked in general!
neuropsych76 Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 I've met one of the profs there for neuro and he seemed genuinely nice and enthusiastic. Try emailing the head of the program with your ques/concerns. And, what I do that I find helps somewhat is to look on the page that has a list of their grad students and their emails. I just choose a few and email them with my questions. Generally, I email around 7 students and hear back from about 2. thank you for your replies. i haven't found their ranking anywhere so i was a bit concerned as to why they didn't even have a ranking (i know rankings don't mean much but generally schools who do not have a ranking are suspect) They also contacted me via GRE search service so i don't know if that means they have trouble getting students. additionally, i'm interested in their cognitive program and i saw it only had 4 profs so i wasn't sure what the future holds for that area as well.
cogneuroforfun Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 It seems like you're kind of going about this backwards. What do you want to study? Does anyone at WV neuroscience do that kind of research? If so, are they productive and active members of the field? Are they prominent and well-known? The department/school doesn't really matter. Harvard is great and all, but if there is no one there you'd like to work with, why apply? WV is no different. If there are good labs for you, apply and hopefully get an interview and see the school for yourself. If there aren't good labs for you, then you shouldn't apply, whether WV is strong or weak in cognitive neuroscience.
