biggspc Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 What can people tell me about the department and the PhD program them have. Where do graduates generally wind up working? I'm an anthropology major with a strong interest in demographics and I want to be able to get a job outside of the academic world. Also, when they say I need to show proficiency in a language related to demography... what languages are those? Any information you guys could provide would be helpful. Thanks
SocHope Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I'm guessing if you come out of the program, you'll have some pretty neat demography training, which is applicable outside of academia. (If you go to the Demog. Dept.'s website, you'll see that they have a coursework only option for professionals - so that seems to indicate to me a fair amount of professional training: http://www.demog.berkeley.edu/degrees/coursework.shtml) As for foreign language, I don't see anywhere on the website where it specifies that it needs to be a language related to demography. From what I've read on the website (http://www.demog.berkeley.edu/students/programdocs/language.shtml), it sounds like it can be any old foreign language, so long as you are functionally literate in said language. I'm still on the fence about the program, but I bet competition is crazy fierce.
