disoriented_ Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 (edited) Ok, so... I'm a little bit disoriented. I've already been accepted in 3/6 PhD, and now I'm waiting, after being interviewed by an NYU Graduate Committee (via Skype), for the last result. The thing is I don't quite understand if having been interviewed means A) I've already been accepted, B ) I have a pretty good chance of being accepted, or C) I have the same chance of being rejected. The Committee calls me "finalist" via email, but I'd like to know if I'm waiting for a "yes or no" email or if I'm already (and totally) accepted and just have to wait for a financial offer... Please, can somebody help me?? Edited March 2, 2011 by disoriented_
dreaming 1 Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I would say it means you're in category B- most arts/humanities programs (inc languages) could never find the time and manpower to interview each and every applicant! What usually happens in my understanding is a process of 'shortlisting'- a few top candidates are contacted for interview and then the final admits are selected from that much narrower pool. I had an interview for one of my schools (although interestingly everyone interviewed on this site then got an offer, which could maybe imply category A- even though that certainly wasn't clear at the time!!). Apparently they did 20 interviews from 260 applicants, for 10 places- so you can see how by being interviewed your odds are significantly better! Good luck!
