I was there for the interview weekend for the social program and I haven't heard anything back yet either. I know that one social applicant posted a rejection post-interview. Best of luck, we may end up in the same cohort!

Pheww! It's taking forever! I wonder when we will hear back? Or if anybody else on here interviewed also.

Yeah, it's making me nervous. My POI and my student hosts all said that decisions would be made in a week or two. It's going on week three.. argh! My hope is that they are putting together funding packages for all us admitted folks, and that's what has been holding it up!

Oh man!! It's my top choice! My POI interviewed three of us...so I guess I have 1 in 3 chance of getting in! I don't think I can wait another 2 weeks. Yikes! Good luck and at least we are not rejected ...yet.

Yeah, it was my top choice before the interview, and even more so post-interview. I interviewed with John Allen and Dave Sbarra in the clinical area as they do some collaborative work with the social students. They were such cool guys. That place is so chill, yet so productive... it really fits the way I like work. Best of luck!

Yes, I got such a great vibe! Where else did you interview for social? I'm waiting on another program (clinical) post interview. I really want to email my POI,, but trying to be patient.

I got my acceptance for the Cognition & Neural Systems Program yesterday.Yaaay!

What about you clinical and social people, haye you too heard back? And will you be going there?

Posted

Congrats!!! Are you accepting the offer? I have not heard a word, but no rejections either. Yes, I will def go if accepted! It's an amazing and solid program!! Ug it's consuming my every thought!

Yes, I am definitely accepting. So glad the waiting is finally over.....

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. Can't be too long now before they start sending the decisions.

I have to admit though I'm a little jealous you got to see the campus and the department. I am an international applicant, so no interview weekend for me :-(

What was it like? How did you determine there was a good vibe?

Posted

The campus is beautiful! More importantly, the faculty and students really like each other and students get along great! There is so much support in a relaxed (it's tucson), yet productive atmosphere. They are rated #3 in the country for faculty and students publications. There is just a real sense of family and the students really seem happy in the program. It appears to be a collaborative environment that is respectful, warm and empowering. These are all things that were especially important to me aside from their impressive academic and professional resources. I'm so jealous that you know!!! I guess the clinical are the last to know. I really hope I am not waiting for a month just to be rejected. I would be devastated!

Yes, from all the emails I too had the impression that the people over there are incredibly nice and more supportive than I would have ever imagined. And now that you have the same impression I'm so happy to go there.

The only thing that worries me is the funding situation. I have outside funding for the first and maybe second year. In the admission letter they say that they anticipate employment for me in the future years, contingent upon the availabilty of funds. "While it cannot be guaranteed, most students obtain research assistanships or summer teaching positions to supplement their academic year stipend'

Did they say something about their budget when you visited?

I was told on interview day that we were going to be funded for 5 years. Plus, most get paid externships.

UA was my only interview. I also got waitlisted at Kansas (KU). I also applied to UT-El Paso, Florida State, and Brock University (in Ontario). I'm pretty sure I'm either wait-listed or rejected from FSU. I don't think that El Paso or Brock do interviews, so I'm just waiting to hear from those two. Still no word back from UA, hopefully today is the day!

I was a psychology undergraduate at UA and did research in two labs that had clinical/CNS grad students. The two clinical grad students I worked with both got internships this year at their top choices, so it seems like a good program. I can't add too much else, except that it really was a great department and living in Tucson was fantastic.

Are you currently attending their clinical program? (It says currently attending on your status). Or did you apply to their PhD program?

No, sorry, I should have been more clear. I'm in another PhD program currently. I considered applying to the CNS track in psychology, but my undergraduate advisor recommended going somewhere else for PhD and there were plenty of other interesting programs and labs. So I can't help if you're looking for info on the current admissions decisions or anything, but if you have more general questions about psychology at UA or Tucson, I should be able to help.

Why did he recommend going elsewhere for a PhD if you don't mind me asking?

Just found out today that I didn't make the final cut for the social program. Oh well, their loss! I thought I was a great fit for their program, and I'm sure in other years I would have had an admit, but I'm at peace with it. Best of luck to those still waiting!

Oddly, about three hours after getting an email of rejection from my POI at UA, I got an acceptance with a VERY generous funding offer from a university that I kinda forgot about while obsessing about UA. I had one drink for sorrow and about five more in celebration... so overall, a good day!

I'm so sorry-that really sucks, but it sounds like you got a better offer. It seems to be the case this year. So congrats! I'm sitting with no acceptances yet. I'm waitlisted at a few programs and haven't heard from some others. Do you mind if I ask if you found out by email or phone?

If I had applied to do a PhD at UA, it would have been to continue working in his lab. There are a couple major reasons why that wasn't ideal: getting experience/mentoring in different labs opens you up to different methodological and theoretical frameworks (for example, going from fMRI -> electrophysiology, or cognitive psychology -> systems neuroscience), and there were plenty of other labs doing similar interesting research (I applied to 10 PhD programs all to work specifically with one or two PIs at each program). Basically, staying in Tucson would have been convenient and easy, but there were better options in terms of my specific interests, diversifying my "network," and going to the strongest program for which I was competitive.

I got an email from my POI last night. Yeah, I'm bummed, but the acceptance I got may be a better fit after all (and is actually still in the Southwest and on the border, so I can still pursue my same research interests regarding immigration issues)... My POI at UA was very nice about it and said that I should contact him any time for advice on where to go or with questions as my studies progress. Considering his notoriety in the field, it seems that he's a very good person to know.

I just saw a wait-list for the clinical program at UA posted in the results section. Was that you, bamba?
