ALC0520 Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I got accepted to one of the 4 schools to which I am applying. The deadline was actually yesterday and I already got an acceptance letter from the school today (quite shocked that it happened that fast). In the letter they sent me it says that they need to hear from me if I will be accepting or declining admission to that school within 2 weeks. That seems like a really fast time, especially since I might not hear from my top choice by then, and one other school's application deadline is not even until April 1, so I definitely will not have heard anything from them in the next 2 weeks. Does anyone know how strictly enforced this time limit is for schools? I would like to be able to consider all options, but I also do not want to turn down this school if it turns out to be the only place I am accepted. Thanks for any advice you can give.
newms Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Is this a funded offer? If so and if the school is a signatory on the Council of Graduate Schools' resolution, then they are supposed to give you until April 15 to accept. If not, I guess they can set whatever deadline they want unfortunately. What I would do in your position is to ask for more time in order to make this very important decision.

The acceptance did not come with information about funding. The school I applied to is Rutgers and I would be taking classes at their Camden campus. I checked the link you provided and Rutgers New Brunswick and Rutgers Newark are on that list, but not Camden, however, my application materials had to be sent to the New Brunswick campus for the program I applied to, and the letter I received came from New Brunswick as well. I guess I will contact the school to try to find out more information. Thanks.
green8715 Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I was searching the forum to see if this exact question had been asked! I recently received an assistantship offer with a deadline in 2 weeks. The problem being I am waiting on another funding offer from one school, and I interviewed at a school a few days ago and was told it would probably take them 2 weeks to decide who they are offering admission to. I emailed the faculty member who sent me the assistantship with the deadline and asked if it was at all flexible and explained my situation - I am not about to be rushed into a decision over what school to accept. I was sort of annoyed they even gave a 2 week deadline - obviously I understand the earlier they know if you are attending the easier it is for them to accommodate other prospective students, but still...

Same thing just happened to me! I think I'm going to email them back asking for an extension, and politely point out that the school signed the Council of Graduate Schools resolution stating that I should not be obligated to make a decision before April 15. I don't understand why they would sign the resolution if they didn't intend on honoring it. Reminds me of Iran.
