artgeek Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 I feel dumb, but I want to make sure I know how much I'm being offered. The letter says: "In addition to the funding above [small fellowship] we can guarantee you two quarters of support in your first year in the form of a 25% TA, 25% Readership, or a 25% GSR. TAs receive a salary of approx. 2828 per quarter and Readerships receive a salary of approx. 1297 per quarter, as well as a partial fee remission for each quarter you hold one of these positions. You will be responsible for approx. 275 each quarter for fees not covered by a TA/Reader appointment. The GSR pays 2026 per quarter. This appointment pays all fees, but not non-resident tuition." It's a UC school and I will be paying non-resident tuition. I'm new to this, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
kisu1492 Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 They didn't offer you a tuition waiver? at my school i think 25% TA means half time TA. In other words, at my university TAships are .5 time, and some positions (very few that I am aware of) are half of that. It's a lighter workload, but less pay and for us you don't have access to the state insurance plan. I feel dumb, but I want to make sure I know how much I'm being offered. husky Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 It sounds like you will only have two quarters of support. There are three different kinds (GSR, TA and Readership). They each pay different amounts. But they don't tell you which one you will get, just that you are guaranteed some kind of support for 2 quarters. You may not find out until quarterly assignments are made. I'd call and get more details.

In terms of money, you will either get $2828, $1297 or $2026 per quarter on top of whatever amount they offered you in the fellowship. It sounds like they only guarantee this amount in the first year. Do they say what you are supposed to do for support in your third quarter? You might try to get in touch with people in that department to find out the likelihood that you can get a TAship for that third quarter. You will also need to find TAships for the remaining years in the program. Is the department willing to pay the difference between out of state and in state tuition for the first year (you can qualify for in-state after that, but start talking to people at your school about all of the steps you need to go through)? I think that this in itself is about $10,000.
