This is the first year UC Berkeley is offering MEng programs at the Fung Institute. All those who have been admitted for this program, can we discuss about what all have you guys heard about the program? What all factors are you guys considering to make your decisions?

I received an unofficial admit last week for this program in the field of Visual Computing and Computer Graphics (No funding)

I also got accepted by this program. UC Berkeley will definitely pay much more attention to the inaugural class of this program. That explains all.

Even i got admitted to the MEngg program-Operations Research.

I am pretty sure that the program will be good except for the tuition costs.Did you guys get any financial aid or have you guys apply for any aids?

Posted

@Jackie - No aid. Not applied anywhere for fin aid. Did you get the instructions for accepting the offer/ deadline for accepting the offer yet?

Posted

No.When i mailed them asking for the date, they said me the official letter ,sent via postal, will carry all the details.

Posted

Well! they never replied to my email. Nor have I received any postal mails yet.

Can you let me know when you get the postal mail? Also what is the deadline to accept the admit- 15th April?

I too have been admitted to M.Eng. in EECS for the visual computing concentration. I wanted to know the list of courses from which we can choose our technical electives. I could not find this mentioned anywhere on their website. Any ideas?

Also, do you guys feel that this will be valued at par with the M.S. degree in the industry later on?

Even I don't know the list of courses yet. If anyone is going to open house, they can tell us more about it. I'm not attending the openhouse.

@OldMonk - Have you got the official letter of admission from them? Whats the deadline on the decision? My official letter is held up as the want my degree certificate for some reason. So I still dont have the official letter.

If anyone does attend the openhouse, please let u s all know what happens there.

@MegaMind - I got a reply to my queries. The instructions will be mentioned in the email that we would be getting from the Graduate Division. The deadline to inform them of our decision is April 15th. I am yet to receive their official mail.

Do you mean you have already got the admission package?

Everyone should have gotten responses around second week of March I believe. I was accepted to the Robotics program under EECS. I also agree with the sentiment that the standards were a little low; I actually got rejected from UCLA and got accepted here.

I'm not sure about how to officially accept or decline offers, but you should be able to email the graduate division and ask for instructions. The deadline is April 15th.

For those of you asking for the list of courses to take, you will have to take one engineering leadership class plus one capstone project engineering class for both semesters plus two techincal electives. Check out http://osoc.berkeley.edu/OSOC/osoc?y=12&p_term=FL&p_deptname=--+Choose+a+Department+Name+--&p_classif=G&p_presuf=--+Choose+a+Course+Prefix%2fSuffix+--&p_dept=ENGIN&x=30 for the engineering leadership and capstone project courses. You can generally check out schedule.berkeley.edu for any courses you want.

For the technical electives, you can check out schedule.berkeley.edu as well. Here are the suggested courses for each division of EECS (check out "related courses"):

Physical Electronics: http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Research/Areas/PHY/

Robotics: http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Research/Areas/CIR/

Visual Computing: http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Research/Areas/GR/

I went to the visit day last week; it was pretty sweet. We are the first class and that is going to be a bit of a challenge since we will be guinea pigs, but I feel like the professors will be able to give us more attention and we would have more leeway in what we want to do with our capstone projects because of the novelty of this program.

Thanks! One of my friends got accepted by UCLA and rejected by this program.

Thanks for the post! I also got the mail around first-second week of march, but since then I still haven't received the official admit. Also will all the courses mentioned in the links by you would be offered? Did they talk about what the capstone projects will comprise of in detail? Any ideas of the size of the incoming class for this program (Visual Computing and Computer Graphics, in particular)? RoboticO, it would be great if you can answer to these queries.

Also has anyone received the official admit yet? Any ideas about any kind of funding here? I have heard UCB generally has great funding resources.

Do they send out admisssion packet to admitted students? WHat does the packet consist of? cuz I heard Cal no longer sends out paper admission acceptance packet to students to save money....

Yeah, you are correct in saying that Cal now needs online admission acceptance. I got the official email of admit yesterday. Its purely an online process!

You can watch all the videos that were shown at Visit Day here:

http://www.youtube.com/user/BerkeleyEngineering#p/c/FAAAA03DDA21CCA5

And a .wmv of a "mock class" about a Netflix case study:

http://coemediasrv.coe.berkeley.edu/coe/m-eng/Sidhu.wmv

As you can see, the program really focuses on leadership and entrepreneurship, with emphasis on the business aspect. The structure of the capstone project will be different for every major, but generally speaking you'll be with a team of 3-4 people, seeking to solve some industry problem. Every professor talked a little bit about the industry ties that they had; these teams can jump onto existing projects or if they have compelling projects that address some industry concern they can solve. In terms of resources, every research lab will put an effort to provide the resources needed for M.Eng students and their projects. I don't believe they would ever give funding to students but the existing resources are definitely there for the students to use.

What do you mean by the official admit? You were suppoed to get an email with the official acceptance and a link to accept or decline the offer. This is the official way the University deals with admits.

I am from India and I will be applying for the F1 student visa. I wanted to know how long will I be legally permitted to stay in the United States after the completion of the program if I haven't already found a job? In other words, how much time do I have to look for a job after the program concludes?

Also, does this time frame depend on the program and the university or is it independent of your university and program?

You will have a universal 3 month grace period once you apply for your OPT during your last term. However you can get a job offer during a career fair which happens early of your last year (assuming you are going to berkeley).

I have a question for everyone out there...will employers respect this degree? I feel like it's not a real master's program with research and a thesis, but a short accelerated professional degree.

Hey guys,

I am a final year student now. I would like to apply to Meng in UCB. Kindly post your profiles which can give me an idea of what sort of profiles they accept.

How is the Job scenario for this course? Is it like the opportunities for MS?

Thanks in advance.
