NCSU ECE weird decision.

I have applied for MS in ECE at NCSU. I had enquired about my decision and the following happened.

I got this response to my query "Call 1095789: Application Status" which I had emailed on 28th March 2007.

"It is our pleasure to inform you that the Department has recommended your admission to Graduate School. Your application is now pending their approval. Please continue to be a little more patient; I know it has been a long time but we had over 1500 applications and reviewed them individually. We look forward to having you with us. Keep checking ApplyYourself and GradWatch as your letter from the Graduate School will appear there. Best wishes."

However, when there was no change in my status I emailed again my inquiry number being "Call 1103794: Application Status" I got a response,

"We regret to inform you that your APPLICATION has been denied. Your test scores and grades on your transcript were not competitive with those of our applicant pool."

I dont know what to say. I was looking forward to joining NCSU as it has always been my 'most wanted' destination for a myriad of reasons. If they had straightaway given me a reject, I wouldnt have been so badly affected BUT this has left me heartbroken.

What should I do now?

There is NO official confirmation yet.
