So I keep getting outside pressure from my work to make a decision about grad school or my job. Is it okay for me to email the POI that I have met and have referenced on my application or should I just keep waiting it out? If I email her how the hell would I start? Dear Prof X, Where am I in the application process blah blah blah would like to express my continued interest in your lab and the department blah blah blah?

Why POI, and not the director or administrator? I would think those two would have more of a duty to respond to you. At this point, sending polite emails to inquire about status must be expected.
