dr.aud Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 If you are on the waitlist at either Vanderbilt or Gallaudet for the audiology program, you're in luck - I just turned each school down - so you should move up on the list. If you are accepted at SDSU/UCSD and are going to turn them down - please do it soon! I'm #15 and prefer San Diego to University of Washington

dr.aud Posted March 27, 2011 Author Posted March 27, 2011 I have also declined my admission to the Au.D. program at Vanderbilt. Goodl luck to all! I was wondering where else you applied - where else you were accepted - and who you chose and why

I've declined all but UNC and WashU, but will be accepting WashU. Visiting, talking to faculty and students, and just looking at what they offer in terms of coursework, clinical, and research, that program seems to be the best match for me. Tons of hands-on at their clinical sites from day one, environment seems positive/supportive, plus I'm very interested in research and that program seems to provide the most opportunities. How about you?

How about you? Applied and accepted to Arizona, Gallaudet, Vandy and UW. Declined all but UW & holding out hope for the wait list at SDSU/UCSD. I didn't visit the school but everyone I've talked to in audiology here (san diego) raves about the offerings at UW. When you decline UNC then maybe someone accepted at SDSU will move up enough on UNC's wait list to get an offer from UNC and then turn down SDSU so I can take their spot!
spring88 Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Turned down Gallaudet as well. I know there are people on the wait list holding out for the program so hopefully they will get their wish! Its a great program and I would've been very happy there. I got into the UW and UTD and was deciding between those two schools because of my specific research interests. Ultimately chose the UW, its a great program and I'm so excited to be attending there in the fall. Can't go wrong with either sdsu and uw, dr.aud! I've been getting the impression that most people already attending UCSD/SDSU have either been rejected or waitlisted. I know a couple of other people who got into top five schools and didn't get into SDSU/UCSD or were waitlisted...like we are talking Vanderbilt, WashU, UW etc. Is it more difficult for IS students to get into the program or something?
dr.aud Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 I don't know about UCSD - but at SDSU there are only a handful of students who are currently attending the SLHS undergrad program who are even interested in AuD. Only one of us got in, but that is still a a greater than 20% acceptance rate. My GPA is 3.8 and I broke 1200 on the GRE. SDSU's undergrad advisor is not on the grad school selection committee - so it is a big mystery. Racking my brains and coming up empty... what is an IS student?
spring88 Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Instate Student. Someone I know who is a current UCSD student got rejected by SDSU/AuD for AuD...she got into UW and WashU however. And will be attending one of those two in the fall. Its so weird. On another forum, someone who got into Vanderbilt was flat out rejected by SDSU..yet she was an undergrad there. I'm curious to know what they look for...maybe more applicants in general despite it being like ranked outside of the top ten? I know its the only school in CA. Rank doesn't matter especially when it comes to number of applicants...Gallaudet had 150 for 12 spots and UW had like 80 for 12 with both choosing slightly more than 12 so like 16. I think its more location of the school.
dr.aud Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 Instate Student. .. I'm curious to know what they look for.. Oh yes - I have a theory (with absolutely no evidence to back it up) that the SDSU/UCSD program selects out of state student's as their first choice because they are required to pay SO much more to attend the school! The budget crunch here is really horrible!
dr.aud Posted April 1, 2011 Author Posted April 1, 2011 I forgot to ask - did you get any indication of financial aid from UW? I'm under the impression that the financial aid office won't process anything unless you are accepted at the school - and the only way for the computer to show that is if you actually accept their offer of admission... But I feel uncomfortable saying yes if the financial aid award is not enough. Catch 22!

I'm likely to get work study, some financial aid based off what they told me at Financial Aid. We now get to declare as independent so that helps. Plus I'm getting paid next year in the lab I already work in @ the UW. For OOS, it will be expensive the first year but for the following years there are more opportunities to get grants and tuition waivers. UW just doesn't offer it up front. I would email the AuD coordinator at the UW if you have questions about that. She is really great at answering questions.
dr.aud Posted April 1, 2011 Author Posted April 1, 2011 Thanks so much. I feel like such a dumba$$ - just got an "official" acceptance from UW. I thought the AuD offer was official! You are very lucky to go to the same grad school as you did for your undergrad work. It is good to know "the system".
