Hi

I got accepted to both NYU and University of Florida Gainesville. Now I have to decide which one to go to. UF is a higher ranked program and has much better weather. However, NYU is NYU and it's in New York. I am a city girl so the craziness of Manhattan is appealing. Does anyone have any advice?

does anyone have any suggestions?

my major dilemma is that NYU is in New York City which would be an amazing place to live. But, UF is a higher ranked program (in speech pathology). Is it a bad decision to choose based on a city for a masters program?

I would choose the better program. Unless its an issue with having family/friends in one area and not the other, I wouldn't make a decision based on the city.

I am also trying to decide between UF & U Tenn Knoxville. I've never been to UF's campus, but it is highly ranked, making me more inclined to go there. Have you been to UF, or know much about the program?

I haven't ever visited UF's campus. I have some cousins that went there so they've told me about it. The only stuff I know about the program is what's on the website. However, I did email the prof that accepted me yesterday and found out they have no funding this year for assistantships.

I know what you're going through! I'm deciding between UC Berkeley and NYU for PhD programs in molecular biology. I know that for my field "rankings" don't mean much, but i know that berkeley is more renowned than NYU in just about every field. NYU's research is more appealing to me than Berkeley's and there are environmental factors about both places that I like. But when am I going to get the chance to live in in New York again?? Now's the time before you settle down and (maybe) choose a less hectic lifestyle. Weather only makes a difference if it's that much of a hindrance to you. Like I would love to live in 75 degree weather all year round, but living in snow is not a deal breaker for me, whereas for other people, I know it is. So that's up to you.

I think my current opinion is that the rankings really shouldn't influence you (unless you're in the Law field where I've heard its super important). Just remember that environment should be half the decision because if you're not happy in you're environment, you're never going to make it in school! So, I think that, and how well the program prepares you for your future endeavors should be your biggest factors.

Hope this helps, and if anyone has any advice for my NYU/Berkeley dilemma, please help!!!

I'm deciding between schools for SLP, too. I live in NYC already, but I think we're going to be so incredibly busy in school that we won't have time to enjoy the city to the fullest. Plus rent and cost-of-living here are terrible, so take those into consideration.

Are you interested in working in schools, though? Because the TSSLD is mandatory for that in NY State, and it's a pain to get it after you finish a program. So if you're thinking of moving to NYC one day and working in a school, maybe NYU makes sense.

Thanks for all of the advice :)

I've been taking cost of living into consideration for sure. It would definitely be easier to afford living in Gainesville. I don't want to be in the schools but that's a great point.

I guess I just have to decide what kind of culture I want to live in because they're both completely different. Plus, UF has a smaller program that NYU which is kinda nice.

But I always come back to the "But it's NYC." argument. Haha

I'm having the same issue for SLP! I'm deciding between Purdue or CU Boulder (or maybe Washington?). Tuition-wise, the former two would be comparable. Buuuuut one is in West Lafayette, IN, and the other has mountains and a much more liberal culture. The worse location is the more prestigious, too.

Personally, I'm beginning to believe that prestige doesn't matter as much in a terminal SLP degree. The job market is good enough that you are going to be employed once you graduate. If you plan on going into research or teaching, maybe pick based on reputation. Or, if one program has clearly better clinical connections (which I can't imagine being true, seeing as NYU is in NYC), pick that one. Also, I'm a prereq student, so I'm going to be spending three years at my program of choice, and I want to ensure that I can be happy outside of class and clinic time.

But I'm glad I'm not the only one! Cost of living is a little bit higher in Boulder, and it's a little less prestigious, but.... it's Boulder over Indiana. I'm visiting to see how it feels, so if that's an option, do it!
