  1. Is anyone attending the open house at Hunter College tonight? I'm so excited to meet everyone!
  2. I still haven't heard from Long Island University-Brooklyn. I assume I've been rejected, but it would be nice to have been notified! I e-mailed them weeks ago asking for an update, but they simply sent a reply confirming acceptance of my application. I've accepted elsewhere and am happy with my choice, but it's just extremely odd.
  3. I really think it depends on your program, so I would check with them to make sure you will receive credit for it.
  4. Hi! I have a friend who was in your exact position last year. I will message you about her.
  5. NYC is great. Don't worry, you'll be fine. The subway runs 24/7 here, so even if you can't live on campus something will work out.
  6. Thanks! I know that my university counts oceanography as a physical science, but I would check with your program. "Physical science (3 credits) - examples are chemistry, physics, earth science, oceanography, geology, astronomy, weather " ASHA is a bit vague on what counts and leaves it up to programs to decide: "What courses are acceptable in those four areas? Individual graduate programs will determine which courses are acceptable in biological science, physical science, mathematics, and social/behavioral sciences. The CFCC believes that the individual graduate programs are best equipped to make the assessment as to whether or not specific courses will best serve as providing appropriate and adequate pre-requisite skills and knowledge. A list of courses that might be accepted to satisfy the prerequisite requirement can be found in Standard III-A of the speech-language pathology standards." http://www.asha.org/certification/2005_SLP_FAQ.htm
  7. There's also La Salle University, which offers online classes. You don't have to find a proctor for your exams, but the courses aren't as cheap as Utah. Anyone have any idea where to take a physical sciences class online? I need that for ASHA.
  8. Well, at least living expenses in NYC aren't high. Oh, wait. $#&*#$@j43jkl3kl43*($#@)*$#@
  9. Congratulations! I think you're making the right decision by going with your gut. This will be at least 2 years of each of our lives, so it's essential to be somewhere you feel comfortable. Boston's a great place to be a student, too!
  10. Well definitely apply if you choose TC! I don't like the thought of committing to 8 more years (including graduate school) in NYC, but on the other hand it would be nice to have a guaranteed job. I was accepted to Adelphi, Hunter, and TC. I was wait-ilisted at NYU. I haven't made my decision yet, so I'm trying to find out as much as possible before I do so.
  11. What do you mean "waive my tuition?" Are you talking about the BOE scholarship? If so, keep in mind that those are very difficult to get, so do not go to TC if you're depending on that scholarship. My friend got one for OT, but I've heard that they've become rarer for SLPs, especially with the budget crisis that is affecting New York state (and everywhere, obviously). I was thinking about the BOE scholarship, too, but like you, I don't want to be required to live in NYC for ages. I love it here, but life happens, and I may want to/need to move after school. I have a friend who went to a CUNY for SLP, and now she's living in Portland, Oregon working in a school and very happy with her life. She said that nobody cared that they didn't know much about the school she went for her master's degree. Wherever you go will be ASHA-certified and will give you numerous internships to put on your CV, and that is what matters the most. Oh, and of course your quality of life and happiness matters the most! Personally I would go to IU! Have you ever seen Breaking Away? Rent it immediately. It seems like a wonderful place to be a student!
  12. 26 is young! I'm 31! Believe me, I wish I had been able to start down this road earlier, but I'm not going to let my age (and really, 31 is not old) get in my way. Neither should you!
  13. Are you able to attend any of the events for admitted students? I'm attending one in NYC, although I'm 90% sure I will be going elsewhere. I don't understand TC's status as an "affiliate" of Columbia, and today I discovered that TC doesn't even share Columbia University's endowment, which seems ridiculous. I don't know of other Ivy League education schools that seem to have such a tenuous relationship to the university as a whole.
  14. Thanks, Tayfray. I didn't have to use CSDCAS, and everything I have heard about it this year makes me realize how lucky I was. My boyfriend's college didn't have grades, either. So when he applied to grad school he had to send each school a huge packet of all his professors' reports. What a nightmare!
  15. Vent away. This process is a very difficult one. It is hard to see yourself reduced to a a GPA or a GRE score, when that is antithetical to everything I believe should happen in education. I hope they respond to your query with some constructive comments/explanations! Oh to be a fly on the wall of the admissions offices of these schools . . .
  16. I was accepted at TC and waitlisted by NYU. My impression of NYU is that they are really trying to build up their reputation for research. That was something repeated again and again and again. Do you have your pre-reqs completed? I think if you don't you most likely spend the first year just doing pre-reqs. TC's program has an emphasis on bilingualism and multiculturalism. I'm going to visit the 15th, so I should have more of an impression then. I believe that TC has a better reputation than NYU among NY SLPs. The NYU program seems to be going through a transition and trying to find its direction--at least that's what I've heard and what my impression was.
  17. I completely agree. If you're curious, I would contact the department and ask them for specifics. If they're going to send a letter like that they should be prepared to be asked about it.
  18. Once again some comments on the results board are making my skin crawl. [Cue the after school special music.] These decisions are complicated. Admissions departments look at more than just GRE scores and GPAs, and often people have certain qualifications that can't be quantified numerically. Often real-life experience trumps book smarts. That's just the way it is. If you're slandering other people who were accepted, it probably means you should take a step back from this process. Also, if you're stating that something is a "pretty crappy school," I would question why you spent the time and money to apply there in the first place. Don't let this process make you bitter and unkind. Those are not qualities that will help you when you are an SLP. Okay! I just had to get that off my chest.
  19. That seems unnecessarily harsh and vague, too! Sorry you had to receive that. But it seems as though you're better off going elsewhere if they treat people like that!
  20. No. The programs want you to, I assume, but you are under no legal obligation to do so. And frankly, it's not as though they have a right to know where you end up attending. Just like we don't have a right to know whom they accepted/rejected. But if you want to tell them why you are declining, fine. I just think it's unfair for them to act as though you have some moral obligation to tell them.
  21. TOTAL BUMMER! But you're totally rebounding with the New Yankee! (Mets fans need not apply )
  22. I'm really sorry how things turned out for you, but your positive attitude and persistence make it clear that you are more than cut out for graduate study and being an SLP! I know that the GRE is changing in August, so I am not sure what to recommend. For me it was just working every day for a little bit for a few months. Make flash cards and review them whenever you have a few moments. Read the New Yorker and some books that will expand and/or reinforce your vocabulary (most of the classics are good for this; you will recognize a lot of the vocabulary from your GRE words). Practice writing essays. I don't know anything about internships, but if you have time to volunteer with the population you are interested in working with, I thoroughly recommend doing so. Not only will you gain experience, but you also will make connections and will have a supervisor who may be willing to write a LOR for you. Good luck.
  23. Wow, I've never heard of that before. They can't force you to explain. I mean, it's a courteous thing to do, but really all you should have to say is "I decided to attend another school." Emerson, stop being that person in the break-up!
  24. Does anyone know about this program or have any contacts who know about it? I have tried contacting current students, but so far I have had no luck. Thanks!
  25. I think this just indicates that we will be compassionate SLPs. : ) It sort of feels like you're breaking up with someone, eh? "I just don't think this is working out. I want to see other people. Let's still be friends, though, okay?"
