Hello- I have an offer from ITP @ Tisch. I am looking to speak with anyone who's been part of the program or knows anything substantial about it? Also, I haven't got a scholarship and will probably have to take a 100% loan. Has anyone ever done this? I know that NYU has a pretty great network but I am wondering how many years it will be until I am debt-free.I am not a US citizen, which complicates the problem. Any thoughts/ opinions are welcome.

Also I am from a non design/tech background. My engagement with both have been on a theoretical level. I am wondering if this will be a problem. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Ananya,

I started at ITP last year. NYU is expensive so you should really think long and hard before committing to such substantial debt. I was lucky enough to get a scholarship at ITP but I still have to take out loans, not to mention am paying for undergrad loans. The program itself is something I've never experienced before. It's equal parts mad scientist laboratory and tech startup. The greatest thing about ITP is your peers. Each class is 100+ people from all different types of backgrounds. Your classmates and the things you learn from them are arguably more important than the classes you take. As far as NYU goes I haven't really taken advantage of their "network" nor have I at ITP; however, there are companies coming in weekly to look for students to hire and demo their new warez.

Your background is not a problem at all. We have photographers, painters, dancers, lawyers, engineers, people from all backgrounds.

Hope that helps.

Ask if you have more questions. :)

Hey thanks so much for this! Sure helps talking to people. So you are around at ITP this year too, right? Couple of more questions-

1) I don't have a scholarship/financial aid, although I have written to the department for some aid. Do you think this could materialize in the later semesters, if not right away?

2) I am a little worried about the class size! How does that work out? Are classes packed? Does everyone get enough attention?

3) Have you been part of work-study programs? How has that been for you? I hear that they take some load off the NY expense.

Thanks much for this. Lets be in touch. :)

No prob. :)

Yep, I'll be there this fall 2011.

1. I was lucky enough to get a good scholarship/aid package going in so I didn't have too but a lot of ITP'ers I know bargained a lot to get money out of the department. I would try extra hard to squeeze money out before you accept. As for later semesters, I'm not sure - I imagine it could if you were proactive about it. At school's this expensive there always seems to be money floating around for the people that go and get it.

2. Classes are quite big to be honest. It was kind of weird at first compared to MFA programs with 10 people but I've gotten use to it and like it better. It can be chaos but it's beautiful. There is an energy on the floor with so much going on.

3. I had no interest in work-study, too busy with work as it is. A lot of people do work study at ITP though. Essentially the entire floor is run by students. Everything from the equipment room, the shop, the main desk - there are lots of positions around. There is some competition for them considering how many students there are and I think there is a interview process but I don't think that's a big deal. Basically if you are responsible and your schedule it 100% dedicated to ITP you will get a job on the floor.

Hi Decaf! You are the first person I have found online that has applied for fall 2014. How did your interview go?

I got accepted yesterday but I am a bit in a dilemma choosing between two schools.

I'll be at ITP next fall too! I couldn't be more excited!! We should start up reddit.com/r/nyuitp again!

I have been accepted into ITP with a scholarship. I am con used between ITP and ID IITChicago. I am interested in UI/UX design than physical computing. I am not sure if ITP can give me what I want. Are there students in ITP who concentrate on mobile/ app based design as well? Clarifications on this will be immensely helpful.

I'm weighing an offer from ITP as well and would be totally on board with starting a thread or a reddit to discuss what we know/like/dislike? and also scheme about funding. It would be nice to track down Ananya.

 Hey,

I have some seniors who went to ITP. It is not traditional interaction design although they touch upon it- more focus is on phyisical computing. Mobile app based / HCI- UI UX related course are in CMU HCI dept/ GaTech HCI- these are the best ones.  I'm not sure about ID IIT- guess go through the program and courses to get a better idea?

Hope it helps.
