This is a chance for the newly admitted Duke grad students to connect to similar newbies and hit the ground running when they arrive in August.

Swap contact info, learn who's in the program as you, so I'll start.

I'm Rob and I was accepted into Duke's MIDP program, with a Peace Corps Fellows Scholarship.

I'm excited to move to Durham and meet all the new and interesting students that I'll be working with over the next 2 years.

I was about to start this topic! I'll be starting the Pharmacology PhD program this fall, and I couldn't be more excited.

I wanted to start this topic but didn't know what to say!

I am now 99% sure I will be attending the Nicholas school at Duke for the MEM program. When is everyone going to start looking for housing?

Excellent - I've been waiting for this thread to start.

I'm Aaron, starting my PhD in the Ecology program this fall. I'm planning to move to Durham in August. I haven't thought much about housing. I browsed craigslist some but got frustrated because of numerous posts from the same apartment complexes, etc., which made it hard to search. Have you all come across the university site for community housing? http://www.studentaf...ommunityhousing I am hoping that it starts to fill up with more options this spring...

Hi everyone,

I am Aaron, from California.

I will be attending Nicholas School's MEM program specializing in energy and the environment.

I am planning to move to Durham early August in time for orientation and getting familiar with the area.

Is anyone planning to bring a car? I am probably going to take public transportation and get a bike to get around.

I looked at the university housing site and Craigslist. I am guessing that there will be more options by late May and early June for fall housing.

I still have to stock up on clothing to move from the West coast to the East.

So, is everyone excited for the fall?

I'm actually from the area and spent the last four years in Durham without a car. It wasn't great, but it's doable. Plus, my student host during interviews mentioned he didn't have a car and was using his bike primarily.

I am thinking that it would be a bit hypocritical to be mastering in environmental management and then driving a car around.

Plus no car contributes to big savings on gas and parking fees.

I'm also coming from CA sans car! Same program and focus too :]

I'm going to search for a summer internship in Durham, so I can move out early and get adjusted. I have a friend who's a current student and I'm going to sublet from her for summer.

That is cool.

I am from Los Angeles, went to UCSD for undergraduate.

It is good that you get a head start and be ready for the fall.

I am going on vacation to Asia till July and planning to head east early August to settle down and be ready for orientation.

Housing looks much cheaper in Durham compared to CA.

One can get a private room and restroom for around 500 bucks.

I had to share a room and restroom for the same amount in San Diego.

I would do a summer internship too, but I guess I want to relax for another few months before getting back to school and internships and all that again.

Cool, another Aaron! I'll probably run into you and monotreme; my advisor's main affiliation is the Nicholas School.

I will be bringing a car, but I plan on using it as little as possible. I'm hoping to find a place relatively close to campus for biking (I'm recently coming from Fort Collins, CO, which is a great bike town).

I am really excited about Durham! Did any of you visit cool restaurants, etc., during visits? The 9th Street area seemed pretty happening (one of my friends who lives in the area took me to Sam's Quik Stop when I was there; best specialty beer selection I have seen), but there are probably lots of gems that are not on that street.

I am an Asian Aaron. There are not many Asian in Durham is there?

Beer sounds good.

I try to minimize beer intake since it is mostly empty calories.

I wonder if we, graduate students, will have time to bar hop or bar crawl on weekends.

Bump!

I already knew I was going to Duke, but I turned down my last offer finally so it feels extra super official now. Can't wait!

Hey everyone!

I'll be attending Duke in the fall pursuing an MPP at Sanford. I'm really excited to start looking for housing and getting everything squared away. Not sure if I'll be bringing a car or not. I'm still debating that one.

For all the Nicholas Students,

Have anyone started reviewing calculus and statistics for their diagnostic exams?

I have pretty much forgot most of my math,

It is difficult to cram so much material back in.

Hi Aaron--

Where are you coming from in California? I, too, am hazarding the cross-country venture, although I'll be in the Literature Dept.

I do have a car on the east coast (since I did my undergrad there), but Durham's pretty small and not all that hill-y. I live about a mile and a half from campus and am planning on biking it.

Congrats!

Hi, I'm Meaghan, and I will be starting in Duke's M.A. program in Religion (NOT at the Div school...sorry, a lot of people say that to me since Duke's Div school is so great, but I am doing a secular education). I did my undergrad at N.C. State, and I'm from a small town in the Piedmont of NC.

I skimmed through the thread and was surprised at the public transportation discussion - I absolutely would not recommend using public transportation in NC. I guess I could agree that it is "doable" as one person said, but if you are from the Northeast or some other locale that has outstanding public transportation, NC's will not compare, not even in the Triangle. Of course, I live 20 min from campus, so maybe that hinders me in ways I didn't know. I just wanted to put my thoughts out on that subject having lived in the state all 22 years of my life.

I started a job at the Ford Library at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke in May, and I see nothing but Asian patrons day in and day out. I am not sure what the ratio is in other areas around campus though.

Hi!

I'm starting grad school in sociology. If anyone gets this, are any of you in town yet? I've been here for about 2 months, but just saw this post...

Any of you going to the bar night tonight? (Aug. 4)?

-Jon
