tusharkhot Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 Hi guys, I have got an admit from UMich MS in CSE(not funded) Vs Wisc-Mad PhD (funded) Is it worth going to Umich at the risk of not getting aid after going there(and may be continuing my phd thr or elsewhere) or just go to wisc-mad ? My field of interest is AI where umich is ranked 10 and wisc-mad is 20th Can anyone please help me? Thanks a lot
aus1983 Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 wisc-mad is "well known" for CS, that too AI. I would go to UW, that too with full funding. go for it.
octav1an Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 pretty sure this is a moot point now... one would hope
kbupz Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Out of curiosity, where does one find detailed rankings by subfield such as what the OP is referring to? Is it just from US News after you pay them to get the full version?
husky07 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 USNEWS is a scam, don't get it, it was totally useless for CS.
PCP Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Ranking departments is a pretty futile exercise, but subfield rankings are particularly stupid. The "theory", group in a department, for example, is often just a handful of people, and new hires, which happen all the time, totally change the makeup of the group. Also, the overall rankings change regularly. Go to archive.org to find old ones. For example: In this ranking, CMU is ranked #4 and Berkeley #1. Go back a few years, and its reversed. Go back more, and you can see it continue to fluctuate. You can also find Stanford and MIT out of the top spot. If the rankings were the same every year, no one would by magazines.
